Beautiful evening in western Montana with two Northern's - Pintail and Harrier, with a friend as well.

I also had this shot that I'm torn on and would love any comments and critiques. First, does the image "work" on any level; Second, which crop is better?

The first two captures were very nice and the third one was okay. I wouldn't have bothered posting the last two shots. Too distant, dark, and lacking details to identify its species! Try using the three-second rule, in the future. If it doesn't hold your interest for that length of time, don't waste your time with it.

Nice positions on the birds and great complimentary colors on both harrier and pintail. I also like the third image for the position of the bird and the BG.

In the second post I understand your desire to make that shot work. But it just doesn't. IMO at that angle the duck needs to be large in the frame.

Nice shots; ring-necked is my favourite shot. And as above the second post shot -- just one of those shots that got away in my opinion. Next time :)
