Updates complete

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

All the updates are complete for now.

This was mostly just backend updates to make things run a bit smoother. However, I did drop a few of the forums that we never used and reorganized the rest.

I've also added an option to add a cover photo to your profile page if you like (click your user name in the upper right corner, then click the user name again on the resulting pop up menu. You'll see a button to Set Cover Photo).

Also, I've updated a few of the styles on the default black background version of the forum, let me know if anything isn't showing up correctly. I was tired of the link boxes in the threads having the light background and light text links!

Finally, I added a couple of widgets below the forum area on the main page that show who has the most posts and most reactions over the last seven days.

around 2 meg. I know Ive uploaded at least 2.4 meg files before. Whats the limit?
It's only a 1MB limit (not sure why it took the 2.4MB file). The file size should be 1200 px on the long side for horizontal, up to 1200 wide for a vertical, but 800 is recommended. The site is only 1400 px wide at max, so anything over 1200 px wide and the site / browser resize it (and they don't do as good of a job as you can do in Photoshop or Lightroom)

I have to be careful with my HD space on the server. If I let any size go through, it would fill the HD quickly the board would become a major expense. Currently there are something like 38,000 images uploaded. 😮

Steve, I'm fie with the 1mb limit. Does't do a lot for uploading razor sharp images but give the number of images, everything works well.
One thought / suggestion that may be open for discussion would be could you set a expiration date on images? I.e. images removed after 1 year or 2 years etc. It is rare indeed someone goes back that far looking at posts. It may save your space on the server drive??

Not sure how well received it would be but I wouldn't care if some of my old images were removed.

I had thought of that and it may be something I look into down the road. Right now, we're OK with storage, so I didn't want to do anything until it became an issue. Also, it might be something where it's five years or so, rather than just one or two. I try to leave everything intact though because you never know when someone will find an old thread on a search engine and stop by :)

Also, as for razor sharp images, they actually look better when sized properly for the site. Most most monitors can only display 72 DPI, so anything more than that is wasted. In addition, since the site is fixed at 1400 px wide (and has margins), going beyond 1200px forces to web browser to resize and that's always worse than displaying a properly size image.

If you 1200px images aren't look as sharp as you'd like, try using my free web sharpening action for Photoshop. It's not as handy as just exporting from Lightroom or something, but it really optimizes images well for the web:

Thanks Steve. I always do downsize to 1200 on the long end. Usually when I export they come out at about 950kb plus or minus just a little. Just when I look at them on my monitor they look a lot sharper almost like the forum software is doing some additional compression. Good news is it does it for everyone too. :) I'll watch your video again to be sure I'm not missing some step.

Steve is there a limit on number of posts per day? Tried to post a 2nd thread and received message that I had exceeded number of posts allowed in a 24hr period.

There is at the moment to prevent spammers from filling the board with nonsense. I may go to two posts per day though (once I get back from Africa) since we now have a few extra moderators to help watch things.

Steve, I think you mean updates complete.

Steve, I hope this post catches your eye. You have corresponded with me in the past and I greatly appreciate your replies. Aside from having all of your books / courses, I just joined this forum yesterday. I must say I am very impressed by the topics but more importantly by the members of the forum. You clearly attract a good number of quality, respectful photographers who care about helping other enthusiasts.

That is point 1, but my second point is that although I could 'coast along' being a 'non-supporting member' and so far I see no downside to doing that, but after only 1/2 a day's membership, I am contributing to the cause and upgrading to a supporting membership to help keep this forum alive. You clearly put a lot of work into this and a relatively small donation is very worthwhile.

Again the quality of the membership speaks highly of your work and the quality of your educational material. Wherever your are, have a great day and a huge thanks.

Greetings Steve… I might have paid twice for an upgrade. A receipt never came through and I don’t know which credit card I used 🙄. Any way this could be checked in your end? Sorry for the bother! - Tommie
