Out on Johnson Strait, between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia, I had just missed this Humpback Whale on the surface before he went under --- however, this shot managed to capture his last exhaled breath and tail fluke in one frame, with the distant shore in the background rendering a pleasing seascape scene. D850 with 300mm. Pf plus 1.4 TC @ 420mm, f5.6, 1/640 Sec., ISO 72. Handheld from a boat.

I hope I am able to see them someday. Living and working in Kansas doesn't afford many Humpback shots. Thank you for sharing yours

I got some of my best whale shots in that very spot. It wasn’t Windy by any chance? She’s been hanging out there for a few years now and is very friendly (actually too much for her own safety).

Thanks K, I believe the Californian coast is also very good for Humpbacks --- another option to consider, warmer too !

Nobody on the boat mentioned that name, and we didn't see it again after this dive, but we did see plenty of Orca and a couple of Grey whales too, no breaching or bubble feeding unfortunately !
