Where do people post their photos these days?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Hello! I'm a long-time 500px user, but haven't been very happy with the site for quite awhile. Where do people post their photos these days (that isn't owned by Facebook)? I was considering making a Smugmug account, but I've been with 500px for so long, I'm not even sure if people still even use Smugmug anymore. :)

I post on VERO. It’s a social media site but with better IQ, including uncropped vertical images, than more popular social media sites. I don’t like to play the social media game but VERO allows me to have a portfolio handy on my handheld devices. I used to have a website but didn’t like to maintain it so I shut it down.

What do you mean by "post" photos. Many post photos on sites like this one to share/discuss. Some do and some don't have their own websites whether that be SmugMug, Zenfolio, 500px, etc. I've had a Zenfolio site for years. I don't think of it as "posting" photos when I put photos on there. The term post to me suggests putting photos on some sort of high traffic platform expressly for the purpose of getting exposure.

As in 'upload them to the internet'; I was simply trying to get a better understanding on where people publish their work, as I haven't done so in quite awhile.

As I said I use Zenfolio which is much the same as SmugMug. Pretty much hosting sites without very active communities. The base level service is simply a hosting site. As you go up in cost there are more features geared to professional sales, client access, etc.

Everyone who has an Adobe Creative Cloud account (needed to have for Photoshop and LRC), also has an Adobe Portfolio website, which is part of your Creative Cloud subscription fee. So I utilized Adobe Portfolio to create a portfolio website with a limited selection of work to try it out.

In addition, I have a Smugmug site were I upload images to allow non-profit groups to download images I have taken for them in some galleries, and also to share trip images with friends and family in other galleries.

I believe Dan was also implying "for what purpose" in his first reply. I have a variety of places where I can put image on the web, but the purpose dictates where they end up. But like a few others have mentioned, I do not do social media, so my images are mostly for a specific audience.

I understand, but I also was a little off-put by the perceived (and unnecessary) aggressiveness of the tone of their message over a genuinely innocent query.

Thank you for your advice on the topic however!

Sorry to hear that Dan's post was perceived as off-putting. He's a great contributor and a good photographer. I know that sometimes my posts are a bit shorter and to the point than others, mostly due to my trying to do many things at once. I like to check in on the forum for a quick mental break during my work day, and I suspect my posts done after work hours are a bit more detailed. In either event, I try to distinguish between posting photos for viewing (for which I used to use a WP blog which is not mostly inactive) and posting files for sharing and downloading (for which there are many options beyond the usual suspects of ZF and SM, like Hightail, WeTransfer, Box.com, Wipster, Frame.io).

I've had a Zenfolio account for years, I think I pay $40 a year. I noticed the other day as I was working on it to reorganize that it was really slow, like painfully slow. Has anyone with Zenfolio noticed this?

I have a Zenfolio site, post here and over at Nikonians sometimes. I use FB and Insta, but only to share wildlife images, not for social media purposes. I used to use Flickr, but gave up on them a couple of years ago. As has been mentioned, I guess it depends on the purpose for posting the images.

Teddy Bozeman, many times tone is misunderstood in a forum like this. I don't think that Dan's response is too aggressive, but if that's how you perceive it to be, why not send him a PM to get his take on it? I believe that your original post is a very good one, and the responses have been very good, as well.

And welcome to the BCG Forum, BTW.

I've been a user of 500px user for a few years now and have noticed that the exposure to my photos seems to have dropped precipitously. Has anyone else noted that? It was probably a year since I posted some fresh photos on the site, and I just started posting some new ones this week. What I noticed is that their engagement score and "likes" count is far less than what I'm used to seeing. Hopefully my photography isn't getting worse over time. I'm not a person who really gets involved in the social aspect of the site. I do browse once in a while and "like" some of the ones that I like, but that's it.

I have absolutely noticed that. I'm fairly certain it's been taken over by vote trading and bots that game the system.
