In 100% agreement with @Steve and many others, that the Z8 is the best value yet released in high performance ILCs for wildlife photography.
My way of looking at the Z8 is almost a Z9 with detachable grip, but it doesn't use the ENEL18d.... At the launch price, this is very hard to ignore and I'm open to reconsider, especially if a future special is extra tempting!
However, my current system is organized on the Z9 and D6: batteries, chargers and CFExpress memory et al.
I'm also watching the Used market for orphaned Z9's

Pre-ordered with Paul's Photo and got the order into NPS; wasn't going to, but it will make a great companion to the Z9. Will be selling the Z7II which is great, but the Z8 will handle landscapes just as good, but if something happens to the Z9, or I want a lighter option for something the Z8 will be nice. Looking forward to it.

I have ordered it with the 24-120 for the wife. Should be able to use it as backup if Z9 starts acting up!
I just order this one on sale (actually received it before they announced the Z8). This will be my first Z mount lens. I've heard such great things about it for an all purpose lens. I'll keep my F mount glass until I get over paying for the camera and maybe wait until there is a Z lens I cannot resist.

Being somewhat tech challenged, how about someone starting a count or poll thread on BCG for people to log their choices to pre-order the Z8?
Mine was the second pre-order at my local Henry's in Mississauga today. I'll be trading in my Z6II in on the new body.

For those who vote "Not interested", feel free to reply below whether it's because you already have a Z9, whether you have no need for such a high-level Nikon, or whether you are invested in one of the other camera brands.
Hi Rassie, I am about to preorder mine at my local Photo Gosselin in Quebec city; knowing that most of the time it's very difficult there to get what you order in an acceptable time frame, I was wondering if it was not preferable to preorder mine at Nikon Canada; may be you get a better experience with Henry's; let me know please; thank you!

If I decide to give up the D6 which the arrival of the z600 tc could prompt, given the absence of Z to F mount options, I'll buy one as my back for my Z9.

I ordered mine right after Steve finished his livestream event. His opinion matter most to me. I have been waiting to see what the z8 was , both specs and cost officially before i pulled the trigger to get the Z9 or the Z8. I am stepping from a D850.

Cristobal, the sales rep at Henry’s told me Nikon has sufficient stock this time to prevent the long wait times (at least for initial orders).

With Nikon shipping the cameras on 25th May, he said I should expect the camera to arrive by the end of May. I would expect at least similar,, if not better deliveries from Nikon direct to you.

Ordered nps a few minutes items after orders were open. Had to order then or wait a day since I had a hernia repair yesterday

Will be a backup for z9 and possible replacement for my wife z6 ii. She says z 9 is too large for her

it's an awesome lens!

I also have heard the Z version is fantastic. I have had the F mount version for years. It is a fantastic walk around lens. This Z version will help me decide if the wife and I both need one when I sell the F mount version.

On May 1st, I put a deposit down at the local camera store. I called today and confimed that it became a pre-order, and asked that the pre-order be for the kit with the 24-120 F4. Hoping it won't be a long wait time.

I ordered one. I realize I need a Z backup body for my Z9. Taking my D850 plus F glass just does not work. Plus having a smaller body choice when travelling/hiking.
Same reasons I decided to order one. I've rarely touched my D850 since getting the Z9, so I figure the Z8 will be an excellent secondary camera.

Thank you for your quick response; finally I decided to make a preorder at Gosselin; they have many stores in Quebec and if Nikon have sufficient stock this time, hopefully some Z8 should be delivered here, I hope....

I preordered mine from Robert's Camera - I usually go through BH but their preorder volume is so very large that I feel it adds extra months onto an already long wait time.

I'm probably going to order one in the foreseeable future, but I decided to wait until at least after my Costa Rica trip next month. For two reasons: First, it's too close to be certain of getting one in hand before the trip. And second, there's another round of layoffs and reorganization coming at my office. I'm pretty sure I'm not on the chopping block, but playing it safe until it's all over.

But I'm 100% sure this is the backup camera I want for my Z9. The only question now, really, is about the timing of when I order one.

I preordered one as well. The Z8 will replace my Z7ii as the backup camera for my Z9, and essentially give me two camera bodies with the same internals and menu systems, albeit slightly different form factors. I almost always bring a backup body along with me whenever I travel, so it will be nice having them be so similar. Plus having two slightly different sized camera bodies to choose from could come in handy in different situations.

I found that it was usually a bit of an adjustment to switch from shooting with the Z9 to using the Z7ii, especially when it came to retraining my brain and muscle memory as to where all the various buttons were (or weren't). However, I was pretty comfortable using the Z7ii for shooting landscapes, where I usually had the luxury of a lot more time on my hands if I needed to futz around with things (which wasn't that often).

However, I'm sure that I'll be much more comfortable using the Z8 (vs the Z7ii) for things like fast moving sports, wildlife, BIF, aircraft, etc. I think the Z8 will be a great companion to go along with my Z9 to allow me to carry two (similar) bodies with different lenses attached and ready for action.

I voted "Not interested" because I'm happy with my A1 and A7RV.

After reading all the good advice on this forum I went to Nikon USA and found I had 3 local dealers. I called them all. The first 2 told me they had no idea what I was talking about and they had no preorder list going. The third had burned down. So I ordered from B&H just after @Owney at 8:02 but before @Ben C. Here’s hoping we get one in the first round.

I’m coming from the D500. I’ve been wanting full frame mirrorless for some time and was just waiting for a camera that ticked all the boxes.

I had the Z9, but I have pre-order also the Z8.
The smaller body with the same performance as the professional one is appealing.
I had also the Z6II that probably I will sell in September after the family trip in Botswana programmed for August.

Preordered one from B&H at 8:09 am CT. I know I'll be behind a dozens or hundreds of other orders but I don't care. The tax savings of almost $400 using the Payboo card are worth it. Plus, it gives me time to decide if I really want it or not. I have a Z9 already, which I would sell if I go through with the Z8 purchase. I have just never liked the size and form factor of it. It's basically a giant, square brick and it's a royal pain to fit in a camera backpack and to travel with. I really don't need or care about having the vertical grip and would prefer something smaller. Battery life could be an issue but I have several EN-EL15's already from my Z7 and those are easy enough to pack and cheap enough to buy more.

I think the main thing that will determine if sell my Z9 and buy the Z8 will be how much I can sell my relatively lightly used Z9 for. I'd like to come out ahead on the swap given how much more the Z9 cost originally, but I haven't looked at the used market yet to see.
Will be interesting to see. Given the $1500 price difference, I think you can probably still come out ahead on the switch, especially if you can unload it locally. If you have to pay seller fees like for eBay or something similar, it might be really close.
