...we don't even know if it really looks bad or not....
Oh yeah we do. It's ugly. Ricci did a whole video on it. So plenty of looks at it from various angles etc. Plus he even made (less than positive)comments about the look of it. Then again ugly is subjective. And if you need the vertical grip and/or ability to hot swap a battery it might be worth it to have what looks like a brick attached to the bottom of the newest/hottest thing that Nikon has to offer.

Next poll - how many preorders did you make (None, 1, 2, 3, or more) AND of the pre-orders you made how many will you complete when your Z8 body (s) are available to ship to you (again None, 1, 2, 3, or more) ? 2 and 2 for me.

[Pauls photo made it clear that unless you provide a deposit the order is not considered as high a priority by Nikon USA -- look at the Thom Hogan on Pauls Photo zoom vid]

Followed by -- for those who are upgrading or at least preordering what are you changing from:
  1. D850 -- my 2 suppliers both said this is the top reason given to them
  2. Z9 -- the internet claims there are a lot of folk wanting to do this
  3. D500 -- because the Z8 is a similar size and 10000x better for roughly similar MP in DX crop
  4. Z6ii/Z7ii or Z6/Z7 -- other semi-pro Nikon Bodies
  5. Other Nikon Mirrorless
  6. Other Nikon F-mount
  7. Sony/Canon mirrorless
  8. Other mirrorless
  9. None of the above - just buying an additional Z body
  10. None of the above - buying new
  11. Still just not interested in a Z8
I am in group 9.

Me too, number 9

Next poll - how many preorders did you make ....

1 preorder
Group 3 - D500 - Z8 will be my first full frame, and first mirrorless, (and first time I've preordered a camera)
In no particular order:
Z8 size is similar to D500, memory card and battery similar.
EVF - seeing the exposure in the viewfinder
AF - subject detection
$1500 savings over purchasing a Z9
Z8 will work well with my 500pf

1 preorder and I'm in groups 3 & 4. I use the Z9 as a primary body and a D500 for sports work and Z6ii for other work. Will be nice to get down to one backup.

Does the Z8 battery's and grip at 10.4 oz / 295 g bring the Z8 up closer to a Z9 ?
I mean the Sony Canon Nikon flagships gripped are all similar and up around the 1206 to 1340 G, where does the Z8 with a grip and batteries fit.

A heavier body can add stability, Leica principal LOL.

I prefer the built in grip hands down for feel use and weather sealing, and have no real issue with the weight of the Z9 for what its used for.
I prefer the same cards, no issue with the card door.
I prefer the bigger powerful longer lasting battery especially if moving some heavier glass like my 300 2.8VR II.
I like the extra buttons in front and bottom rear.
For hiking and traveling i want a camera Z7II like or even smaller with 60 to 100 mp.

Battery's

Z8 7V 2280mAH 16 W

Z9 10.8V 3300mAH 36 W (does the Z9 battery provide snappier/attack performance or more grunt ? not just longevity.
If i use the Z9 battery in my D850 Grip WOW..........maybe its psychosomatic but it sounds a lot different.

Only an opinion

Group 3 modified (D500 + Fuji XH2S). With a limited budget, I maneuver between 2 of my interests/hobbies, photography and motorcycles. For bird photography, and safaris, I “downgraded“ from a D850 and 500mm f4 e to a D500 and 500pf. I got a Fuji XH2S to dabble in street and as a backup for wildlife. The Fuji pairs surprisingly well with the 500pf and convinced me to move away from DSLR. The D500 gathers dust and the Z8 will now replace the Fuji as my primary birding camera. The D500 together with a Honda crf3000l will hopefully make way for the mythical (for me) 800mm pf.

I put in a preorder at B & H at 5 am (Pacific Time) the first day. Now I am getting cold feet. Given that I already own and like my Z9, why does I feel that I "need" this camera? I use my venerable Z7 as my Nikon backup. I might cancel my preorder; after all, this is a pretty good chunk of money for something I am not sure i really need.

Group 3 and 6 for me. A D500 and a D700. Finally making the move the mirrorless.

Three preorders (B&H, Adorama, NikonUSA).....All place within the first 10 mins of the announcement... looking for just one... Will cancel the others once one comes through

11 - Quite happy with my 2 Z9s. Not interested in selling or trading in or whatever since I'd take a significant financial hit. Besides, they're both paid for. Moreover, I like the Z9 form better. Battery life is a major issue. And the Z8's battery grip is an abomination.

As an aside issue, not anxious to spend any significant amount of money as the children in the US Gov't. attempt to play with fire and let the US default on its debt. Best to hang onto my cash for awhile.
You never know, it’s possible that a Z8 might be a better store of value than the dollar when all is said and done…. Anyway, I like my Z9s too 👍

I placed an order the other day. I originally said "meh, I'll wait for the next version of the 9 for my second mirrorless." I changed my mind. I think the Z8 made me finally take Nikon mirrorless seriously. Plus, I'm going to want another mirrorless to backup my Z9 when it's in the shop. Time to update my gear...

I was in the "preordered one" group; now I am iin the "may get one in the future" group. I already own a Z9. Having a Z8 in addition would be a luxury. At present I use my Z7 as the backup. That's good enough for now. $4000 for a backup camera is too rich for my blood. Kind of sadly, I canceled my preorder.

I ordered the grip too. I am invited on the 25 th of May to play with the Z8 and the grip on a Nikon Vip event.
i don’t see it ugly and who cares about the look. For me the functionality and quality is more important than the look.
Sometimes, when someone does not like something, every one will follow. The Z8 with grip looks taller than the Z 9, but we don’t know if it heavier. Plus I will use the grip when I am photographing action and I will use the camera without grip when I am hiking, best what it fit my need
Agreed on function over form, of course. Many comments on the design / mis-matched size to the Z8, but it doesn't seem to be holding anyone back from buying it. Just an odd decision to have it smaller than the body, for such an important body. So I'm more curious than anything, and photographers tend to notice visuals / lines more than "normal" people 🙂 I've been told the grip'd Z8 doesn't feel as big as it looks in vids & photos.

I love the versatility of a modular grip. Even if I only use it 25% of the time, it's well worth it. I did have to cancel my MB-N12 pre-order for now but for sure I'll add it later this summer or fall. I also stepped out of my 5/11 pre-order line to take advantage of Nikon's 5/18-19 0% financing offer, so I re-ordered on 5/19. This might bump me out of the first wave of shipments but that's ok. I'll find out soon enough / this week! :)

I am in group 9.
I'm in Group 9 as well, I have a Z6II which I'm keeping, and adding the Z8. The Z8 is my first (ever) pre-order.

Group 2/4 traded in Z 9 and possibly will give my wife my Z 7ii when the Z 8 arrives
Plus if she likes the Z 8 and it will be group 4 double digits for her.

I just joined-group 1 and 4. Leaving behind my d850 and z7.
Pretty big investment but the results I got from z7 use in Kenya this year and Steve's videos convinced me to move to the new tech. Great shooting everyone!
