With a large summer squall brewing over the waters of Lough Na Keal, Isle of Mull Scotland, these Lesser Black-back Gulls were flying over our boat to get to get to safety on the nearby shore.

Lesser Black-back gulls can live for up to 15 years.

They breed along the Atlantic coasts of Europe

In Britain, they were formerly just a winter visitor, but now many birds are spotted year-round.

Along with the Lesser Black-backs, there were several Gannets returning to their breeding colony at Ailsa Craig --- a huge granite rock off the Scottish coast further south. Although numbers are slowly declining, there are about 40,000 Gannets using this nest site.

Living up to 30 years old these Northern Gannets migrate to the western Mediterranean, with some birds, especially immatures, travelling further south to the Gulf of Guinea (West Africa)
