Caught this bird in a weird position. Looks like the wings are too far back on the bird. Is it just me?

Whoops. Below I'll post a more natural looking shot.I am not sure I would have noticed if you had not said anything.
Thanks, Patrick.-ditto- what a great image
Yes that's exactly the case. In the image where the neck comes from behind the wing is aligned with the legs. I think that's what makes it look so odd. Below is a very similar shot but you can see the front of the body. Results in a more natural looking position.Wonderful photo, Dan!! Not just you; just the bird. Great Egrets have really long necks and this one has most of its neck curled up behind its left wing. When I first looked, I had trouble determining where the body is -- it's much higher than I was imagining and further to the right. Googling <Great Egret skeleton> helps some, but those long necks defy reason.
Thanks, Lance.Lovely in-flight shot, Dan!

Thanks for commenting.Looks great, beautiful capture
It does look like that. Really caught my attention as soon as I looked at it. Thanks for the comment, Charles.Illusion - like the bird is passing through the wings. Wicked good photo!
Thanks, Chuck. Both of the images are beautiful! Excellent work on exposure and composition!
Thanks, George. I came away with quite a few full frame BIF shots. This among them. That's a keeper great details too!
Yeah the wings are bent back to the "elbow" then forward.Dan, I would not have noticed until mentioned it, they seem high towards the back, maybe getting ready for a landing
Chris S,
Thanks for commenting, Bill. That's the way its mama made it. Beautiful though!
Just so.Because of the way that egrets and herons can angle their necks, it appears that way. However, if you saw the exact same wing position from another angle, it would look perfectly "normal."
Thanks for the comment.Lovely image Dan! Crisp and loved the colours.
It wasn't in level flight so body parts were somewhat askew.Looks ok to me, if anything the neck is extended a little more than what I would consider normal.
Just so.Nice shot! Looks ok to me, they roll their wings forward as they lift them, before they push backwards to get forward momentum. You just caught it at the right time.
Thanks for the kind comment.Looks good to me. Beautiful image
Thanks for commenting, Jeff. Exposure isn't hard if you shoot fully manual. In this case I just set it to sunny 16. That was a bit over exposed for the whites but simply tweaked it in post.nicely captured. Exposure on these is not easy, especially against a fairly dark background. As for wing position, most likely just the angle of capture. Looks like most any other egret I've seen flying by (and failed to get a good capture of... . )
