Woodpecker: Z8 learning curve

As my first mirrorless, I really like the Z8. I'm practicing as much as I can,but there is still a lot to learn and get used to. I was walking around with my 70-200 2.8 and barely got this one. The hardest thing is remembering where all the info is on the screen, memory muscle to change settings and that things change depending on orientation. I completely missed two hawks flying low because I couldn't switch settings fast enough and for this woodpecker, the focus mode kept missing the bird as it climbed into and out of the hole. I'll keep practicing, because I need to be really good with it by November.

I have a Z9 but I am sure its identical. Firstly, read Steves settings and follow his advice. When you use AI (focussing on the eye) and the bird is so small it has no idea where to focus. Just use the focus ring on your lens and manually focus on the bird. AI will then take over. It is going to be impossible to change settings to capture a flying bird. You need to adjust your settings as you get out of your car...or make adjustments for the next BIF
