Would Be Nice To Know My Position On Waiting List

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Too many variables. How many above you are on more than one list? How many units per shipment which may not be the same month to month/shipment to shipment. I think it would only worsen things as far as having people get on multiple lists. If I call my dealer he will usually give me an idea of when I might get something based on units so far and the normal delivery times. On top of everything else, the dealer would then have to provide everyone with info regarding their place on the list without actually showing people who are on the list. That's a lot of extra work and frankly, I can't see any gain. When you find a good dealer and stick with them, as I have, you find you don't need to worry about these things.

With so many products in high demand often that buyers are often placed on a waiting list, wouldn't it be nice of the sellers let you see what position you are in their queue?

Look at it this way
It’s not as high as you’d like
it‘s not as high as you think it should be
it’s higher than a lot of other folks
and it’s way higher than the last sucker who will buy that gear right before it’s replacement is announced.

And yes, I should write fortune cookies for a living.

I ordered the original Apple watch when it was first released. At that time you had to order directly from Apple, either online or in an Apple store and if I remember correctly the actual shipping date was a month or two after orders were placed. I found web sites dedicated to projecting when your Apple Watch would ship. People would post the exact date and time they ordered a watch and then update their posting when the watch was shipped and received. People would try to analyze the collected data to project the number of watches ordered per hour during the first few days and then try to project how quickly the supply was moving through the order list. It was a lot of fun to follow.

The Z9 is much different because it can be ordered from a number of suppliers but I am betting there will be similar sites created to track the same data. What I am curious about is how many buyers ordered from multiple sellers, how many orders will be cancelled because of this, and how many Z9s will show up on Ebay and other sites as soon as they begin shipping.

Agreed. Or maybe just learning what their allocation rules are.

I'd paid 10% deposit for a 500 PF. Six months later Nikon Australia told the dealer they couldn't say when the order would be fulfilled. They didn't reply to my queries launched from their My Nikon Life site or their FB page.

Watching while waiting I saw orders later than mine filled and an acquaintance who dropped into a store and idly asked about one walk out with it.

I regard this treatment as contemptuous and it was one of two reasons I swapped to Sony. I could place an order for an exotic telephoto and be told when it would arrive.

If they told you your place in the waiting list how could the poor camera store owner get a high demand item to his brother in law to sell on Ebay for $500 more than the street price? (Only joking - kind of).

I know my place in queue for the Z9 and it’s not bad. The store said they hope it’s in the first shipment but should be at most second shipment. We don’t know how many nikon will be able to ship so it’s nothing is guaranteed, but i might have enough confidence to sell my D500 now. I agree it’s nice to have some idea of when to expect an item

Does that mean your dealer will queue jump up regular customers? Hope he is not my shop! I paid in full including lenses etc and could now save AUD600 buying Black Friday specials and another AUD 500 if I swapped to the A7 R iv. Waiting for the Sony A7 iv patiently 🤥

As it relates to the Z9, visited 2 dealers and both said the waiting list is not long, nothing like the R3, and that they expect to fulfill all orders in 3-4 months from the first shipment. They both rolled their eyes a little when asked about shipments. I guess Nikon hasn't been the best at that. In other words, the bottleneck might be the supply, not demand.

add to the factors that some NPS members may put themselves on a dealers list as an extra safety measure.

what percent of 1st shipments that Nikon USA receives goes to NPS members vs gen pop? How long will it take for NPS orders to be filled?

Nikon has historically been bad at managing new items in high demand with many showing up on eBay as soon as shipping begins and grey market items being available ahead of local supply. They don’t manage their distribution very well and it’s a cause of frustration for retailers and customers.

I Hope they learnt a thing or two from how Sony managed the A1 release. Wait times were usually less than a couple weeks (in the us), there were very few items on eBay and they were open box items most of the time and no grey market items. It is expensive but at least you know how the game is played.

There are a lot of unknown variables including chip shortage impact, other supply chain issues, shipping logistics, all to go along with an unknown number of real orders and NPS orders and production numbers. There also seems to be a lot of contradicting information out there, such as the post above from @Nimi versus the reports on Nikon Rumors stating it could take more than a year for some to get theirs. The person I spoke to at local camera store said he expects them to receive enough on the first shipment to cover where I’m at on the list, so I’m cautiously optimistic.

Thats my question too; I'm hoping for the best ordering NPS the morning of the announcement, but haven't done that before so it would be nice just to get something, such as odds are you'll get in in December. My local shop says they have not heard anything, and all NPS has said is they are committed to shipping before the end of the year. Seems to be about as good as a crystal ball. Hopefully they do in fact ship and I'll get something in email in coming weeks. Would really like to be out using it this winter if possible.

If logistics is a real issue it is not an excuse for not knowing quantities and distribution of completed product. Anything in a warehouse anywhere will have a quantity against the entry and the distribution and allocation of quantities should be simple. Ok, might not know when it will actually be available but you should know where in the supply chain you are. Similar situation in Australia with Sony and the A7 iv. No excuse.

Well I did get my hat today which actually fits my large head as it's expandable. Nice hat. The letter was encouraging too; maybe I'm naive but I'm hoping they'll get them out to NPS folks in December as NPS people tend to be the biggest Nikon fans/gearheads so they'd like some real world buzz. I hope.

One thing is for sure while following the evolution of Nikon on the internets. There will always be some who seek to share gloom and doom. Stoked for Nikon and the arrival of their new camera.
