This young fellow was giving me the eye. Rut was in high gear when I came upon this fellow while out on the trail

Nice one. Definitely checking you out.
Thanks. He was indeed. My wife and I were walking along a trail and came upon this big boy. It was the height of the rut and, like most of the deer relatives, the big bucks kind of lose their minds for a couple weeks. We were downwind from him and our profiles were broken up by the background and foreground brush. As long as we stood still, he wasn't completely sure what we were. The fun part was we stood still and he looked at us for a few minutes (3 or 4 minutes). After he decided there was no threat from the two blobs in the weeds, he went about eating acorns from the ground and sniffing the air in search of receptive does.

From about 14 years old until I was about 25 years old, I spent a lot of time in the woods with rifle and bow hunting deer and learning their habits and how to get close to them - or allow them to get close to me. I'm 62 now so the past 37 years or so I've hunted them with a camera. I do find hunting with a camera to be more fun. I can "shoot" the same deer multiple times through the year which is a benefit. I'm not "anti hunting" I just prefer to do it with a camera these days.

wow, far more info than you probably wanted or needed.

Gosh that sounds familiar, only for me it's been over 50 years. With a camera there's no closed season, we can hunt every day of the year and many people can enjoy "shooting" the same deer.

Super image - may he live long
Thanks. Well there is no hunting on the land where I took this photo so that is a plus. Unfortunately, it's a tough life being a deer in the wild. I, too, hope he lives long and has the opportunity to pass some of those wonderful genetics along to the next generation.

Thanks. I think a lot of wildlife and nature photographers started as hunters. I've talked with several others with similar stories.
