Z Roadmap 20Sept 2022, Nikon brochures

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Nikon has a habit of changing links across those of its websites servers that host brochures and technical data. Brochures etc have a tendency to vanish. This is besides the new releases / revised editions

Timeline of Previous editions of Roadmaps in this thread

[ Update - new Z Roadmap 20Sept into 2023 added pg 3, more recent editions in following pages ]

June 2022 Z Roadmap from Nikon Europe: 2 Z-TCs and 28 Z Nikkors released, 6 are still outstanding (including 2 DX lenses). These are due out by April 2023

Nikkors January 2022 :

Unless one modifies an existing eyecup, there is still no sign of a 'high' eyepiece for the Z9 - i.e. equivalent to DK-19 :

The number of people, like me, lusting for the 200-600 must be humongous! I reckon to order on the announcement day, you’d be lucky to get it in 2024. 🫣
You may be overly optimistic. :)

As long as it has taken Nikon to come out with this lens, they might as well make it an S-line and bump the quality to be consistent with other S-line lenses

cool. thanks for the update

Outside of the wildlife forum, it seems the 85mm is the one everyone is waiting on. hopefully they get the three remaining fx lenses announced/released before the end of year. I’m patiently waiting on the 200-600mm which I was expecting to be released this spring.

Anyone hearing the 'roadmap' for 3rd party lenses, i.e. Tamron or Sigma or other. Obviously the demand for long glass, especially affordable GOOD long Z glass, indicates the presence of a good market. Nikon is not keeping up with the demand to where they may be losing customers, getting some 3rd party players in the game might keep people in the Nikon fold.

i think the best clue we have is the 28-75 lens. it's widely reported to be a tamron 28-75 g1. if so, it might suggest that the 3rd party strategy is to rebrand or something along those lines. if so, i suspect we'd see mostly consumer oriented offerings. another datapoint is the 28-75 was not on the lens roadmap afaik.

I'm unaware of a more complete summary including recent 3rd party lens for Z mount. More with AF are likely as a couple of companies have RVS-engineered Z Autofocus.

But there seem to be zero murmurs of independent telephotos, yet.

as a couple of companies have RVS-engineered Z Autofocus.
i do wonder how completely they have reverse engineered the protocol. i can't help but think the new z autofocus protocol has a subset functionality geared towards adapted f-mount lenses, and a more feature-full version for z-mount lenses. and i'm skeptical that these 3rd party companies take full advantage of the z-mount af protocol.

June 2022 Z Roadmap from Nikon Europe: 2 Z-TCs and 28 Z Nikkors released, 6 are still outstanding (including 2 DX lenses). These are due out by April 2023

As far as i am aware the links you provided are all to the December 2021 releases and are now very out of date. Based on my count there 26 Z-mount lenses have been launched, 2 TCs and 2 FTZ mounts. Another 6 are shown on the road map, which gives a total of 32 + 4 on the current road map and accessories.
.
Lens Model to be Launched in 2022 or early 2023
NIKKOR Z 26mm f/2
NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S
NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4.0 TC VR S
NIKKOR Z DX 26mm f/1.8
NIKKOR Z DX 12-28mm f/4.5-5. VR
NIKKOR Z 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR

The target of 50 by 2025 means there will be another 18 to come.
My guess/hope list for potential 17 of these is shown below.
- the least clear is what will happen in lenses for DX - I suspect this is tied to the replacement of the D500. I could see at least 3 Primes (including tiny/pancake versions) and more/higher quality zooms - including an ultra ultra wide.
- how fast the ultra high quality fast primes will be f/1.2 or brighter.
- whether Nikon will add a 135MC or DC, a 150mm MC, 180mm and a 200mm MC or Stubby replacement.
- some are seeking lower cost/more flexible options - like those made by Sigma and Tamron for f-mount - and we are yet to see any movement in this area.
- there are already a growing list of CINE, APSC/DX and Shift Lenses/Adapters and Mount Adapters - most are manual focus/aperture, not chipped which means they are not impacted by firmware changes in the cameras, but this also means that they do not communicate with the body and do not have in lens stabilisation.
- It is also unclear whether or when Nikon will make Z-mount versions of its tremendous PC-E lenses. These did not sell in vast quantities, but there quite definitely is a demand for them for architectural and interiors AND to be rehoused by the likes of Cambo for use on their technical cameras (the most notable is the 19mm Actar Actus - which is a PC-E 19mm rehoused).

We also guessed what a few of the specs might be for the last 6 on the road map. These are guesses based on previous comparable lenses in both F and Z mount.

Here is some news items of the unannounced Z 600 mm lens from NikonRumors page

While I too am looking forward to this lens - you just showed us the 150 year anniversary advert celebrating Nikon's continuing to be Official Patron of The Open.

There was no evidence that the 600/4.0TC was seen at the event. And I am looking.
If Matthew Harris was provided the lens to test then he would not have been able to use the images from it in anyway that made its presence clear to others. There is no EXIF data on his feed at Golf Picture Agency or Instagram. So - we need to spike this crud rumour. The patent for the Z600mm f/4.0 with TC has been posted and analysed. NR has recently proven that it is not to be trusted. At least 3 recent posts are click bait and NR refuses to remove them when they are proven FALSE. (end of DSLRs, Not taking orders AND this one).

The "photographer" who took the shot of Rory at The Open was Matthew Harris (@matthewharrisphotographer). Matt is an awesome pro golf shooter who travels with the tour and attends the majors. There is no evidence that he was using the Z600/4.0TC - what is more likely is he was using the F-600/4.0E. This was confirmed on the Nikon Pro group on facebook. [#600mmf4] "Nikon is delighted to have extended its partnership with @The-Open-Championship, and what better time to celebrate than during the 150th year of this spectacular tournament. Photographer Matthew Harris (@matthewharrisphotographer) captured these action-packed shots using his #Nikon #Z9 camera and #NIKKOR #Z600mmf4 lens (AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR), showcasing both the speed of the swings and the stunning landscape of St. Andrews. Matthew described how the “high speed of the #Z9 camera certainly comes into its own for golf”, which is clearly shown in the flawless quality of these images. " Paul Ellis and a vast number of other Pro Nikon shooters were out at St Andrews of course they were.

Same applied when I and many others were provided the prelaunch 400/2.8TC to use at an NPS event in London. I did get my own version not much later.

If you have evidence differently this would be very interesting to me.

The eye-piece is called the DK-33 and is shown on the accessories chart for the Z9.
See Nikon Z9 Accessories
There is no Nikon eye-cup for the Z9 yet
Some of us who wear glasses but like a larger eye cup are "hounding" Hoodman to release a version of their much bigger eyecup that fits the Z9.

Exactly. A poster on dpr claimed the Hoodman eye piece is due out soon. I should be able to source one into S Africa Town through BandH
@Lance B published a solution to this gap a few months back

Thanks for your detailed synopsis
Yes, for whatever reasons, Nikon PR falls short of the company's releases, and Regional websites vary in what brochures and summaries etc they host. Nikon Imaging Japan tends to be the most current, and also releases mtf data etc to coincided with new releases.

When I've checked Nikon UK/ Europe has recently maintained current Z Roadmaps. The source above is June 2022 posted just after release of the 400 f4.5S

Thom Hogan's ZSystem user pages are useful, as he includes 3rd party lenses

Hay I am old, positively ancient, and I spend for to much time and money on gear these days. Life was much easier when saving to buy the next role of film and then saving to pay for it to be processed -- but then that was 50+ years ago.

These days the 24-7+++++ posting cycle DEMANDS answers now. PR and Marketing departments s `"useless" because they won't or don't do this (typically give free stuff to overblown "reviewers" with no followers and no impact).
I lose it when such posters personally attack the staff of "say" Nikon USA or NPS USA - when policy and all approvals are run from JAPAN and those members of staff are banned from responding.
AND of course all such parties are biased towards who gives them stuff or they are granted options to buy stuff at vastly discounted prices -- did anyone my Fro's video of his YouTube studio and simply count the number of Canon Mirrorless bodies he was using ..... sure unbiased.
Like T&CN -- oh its too heavy for me and so it is a terrible camera. ....... !!! The T&CN loathing got to a level that T had to post a complaint about folk complaining.
Yes Thom is great and does a great job - I find his and Steve Perry's guides to be the best sources of information/answers. But no outsider has any information -- as much as our friends in the subcontinent might claim otherwise. Everyone who gets to use or test a prerelease body or lens is tightly managed and will not "tell" - not if they want to be used or paid again. This applies to every industry and firm.
We saw NR play stupid again. NR reposed a report by a staff writer on Asia Nikkei (Asia's biggest and most trusted source of financial information) that lead to Nikon Corporate immediately jump onto what they said. I am sure the staff writer will be given a window view if he broke confidence. [BTW this is a really bad thing in Japan]. But by just reposting NR compounded the problem -- they did precisely the same thing w.r.t orders for 400 and 800. Provably FALSE statement reported as fact -- why provably well you can still place orders in the UK, Europe and USA.

So I went the long way to get to YES - Nikon Imaging Products News site is the only official source and the only source on Nikon Camera/Lens info to be trusted. Everything else is made up.

The number of people, like me, lusting for the 200-600 must be humongous! I reckon to order on the announcement day, you’d be lucky to get it in 2024. 🫣
The only saving grace on the 200-600 is that it should be a lot easier to make than the 400 2.8 and 800 lens. There is no doubt that the demand for it is going to be huge. It will be interesting if it is a telescoping zoom like 200-500 or internal like Sony's 200-600. I hear great things about Sony version so lets hope its as good as or not better than it.
