I updated the firmware this morning without issue. I typically download the folder from the Nikon site, then move it to my desktop for convenience.

Yes thanks' was copying the whole file not just the "bin" knew it would be something simple just couldn't put my finger on it! i was going to leave it and sleep on it i find that normally works too

It often is. I know because I've done the same thing as you did with other firmware updates.
I won't get out with the camera until the weekend so i'll find out then!

Of course with the z6ii and z7ii you can update via SnapBridge if you don’t want to faff with downloading etc
