Z8 has arrived!

I HATE FEDEX! My delivery from B&H was "Out for Delivery" today. Expected 10:50am - 2:50pm. I stayed home all day, checking FedEx constantly. Now, I get an email saying there were "Operational Difficulties" on FedEx's part. Sure, the guy delivering, that drove past my house this morning, decided he was tired of delivering and went back. This is not the first time this has happened in my area. Or, they say they attempted delivery but no one was home. No note on the door (and you were home all the time.) Or, they deliver it somewhere else (or say they did) our local newsgroup people are always asking if someone got their FedEx delivery. This one has to be signed for, so FedEx can't pull the "we delivered it" scam, then actually really deliver it the next day. FedEx contracts with so many people, they pull up in a rental van to deliver. I can't believe that B&H contracts with such a shoddy company. They're awful. *done griping*
FeddEx uses jusrt about any excuse to delay packages it seems. I've also had items "out for delivery" only to have the truck not stop until the next day. I've also had packages sit in the local depot for 3 days before it was sent on it's way. FedEx has gone way downhill since the pandemic.

I appreciate it’s not practical for everyone but I decided to visit the store rather than risk UPS. Two hour trip into London to collect but it was much less stressful than having the camera left on the doorstep or stuck in transit over the weekend. I can’t fault the dealer. Great service and always with a smile.
I bought my Z9 from a "local" camera shop about an hour's drive away. I paid over $400 in sales tax. I guess this time, I decided I could use that money to buy cards or something else than giving it to a government, not even my own state because the camera shop is in the state over from me and their tax rate is higher than my state in any case. With B&H I can use their Payboo card and not pay sales tax. So, it's "out for delivery" again today.

They all were bad during the pandemic. I had something sent with US two-day priority mail sit in a sorting center for a week before it moved on after I enquired about it. So far, for me, I've never had issues with UPS.

I'd read on various forums that the battery supplied with the camera is fully discharged and mine certainly was. In order to configure the camera (who wants to wait three hours?) I slipped in an EN EL 15c that I bought during the pandemic when Nikon batteries were very hard to get. These batteries, branded Dot.Foto from Amazon, worked fine in my Z6 and Z7ii but the Z8 will have nothing to do with them. It puts up a notice on the LCD that it cannot communicate with the battery and, therefore, cannot use it for safety reasons.
The Z8 is pushing the limits of the battery a bit harder than the other cameras using the EN-EL15 versions and third party batteries. Peak power requirements on the Z8 are much higher than on the Z7ii and other cameras. I'm sure they have programmed the camera to use the chip in the battery as part of that process.

The V1 and D500 had similar issues about being fussy with batteries. In both cases they were pushing the limits of power needs.

True, none worse than Amazon around here. I guess my point is they haven't regained their pre-pandemic mojo.
My Z8 is on the UPS truck for delivery today, hopefully they don't pull a FedEx and head for the barn before all deliveries have been made.

All the crap stories about FedEx/UPS/USPS delaying packages, yeah, it’s super frustrating. However, has anyone experienced this: they update your delivery status with “Arriving earlier than expected!”, you get all wound up and giddy, maybe even take off work in anticipation, only to be let down when it doesn’t arrive early?

My Z8 is supposed to arrive next Wednesday. Sure, I could walk down to the LCS here and pick one up now, but I absolutely cannot stand the store or its staff, so I try to only order from my favorite, former LCS back in Virginia.

Good news! Mine just arrived. Talked a bit to the FedEx delivery lady. They are working tomorrow and Monday. I asked if she got extra pay for the Holiday and she said, they're not paid hourly they're paid by day. So much each day. No wonder why then if they get near the end of the day, they stop even if they still have boxes on the truck.

Humm, did not know that. It actually explains a lot...

Congrats on your Z8!
Mine has arrived as well. Battery charging.
I sure like the feel of this bad boy!!!

Mine showed up yesterday after pre-ordering it from Nikon a week and a half after it was announced, was not anticipating it showing up for months. Fully expected another Nikon supply nightmare. Congrats to all that were able to get their new camera, for those having delivery issues (I've been shafted by Fed-Ex a couple times too), orders cancelled (been there), or put on backorder (been there also), I do feel your pain and frustration and sincerely hope things get resolved quickly for you.
To Steve, thanks for all your work in getting out the updated Z8-9 setup guide as quickly as you did, upgrading from a Z6ii there's quite a learning curve.

Yes, thanks to Steve for the book! Here's my first test of the Z8 auto focus system after setting the camera up. A live macro shot of a bee in flight! (they are slippery!) Well, we don't have Bison in Beaconsfield!

Mine arrived from Grays of Westminster via DPD on Friday. I've now worked my way through Steve's set-up guide, and am on my way up the steep learning curve from my D7200! Very happy so far....

For myself, The stand out with the Z8 is simply this.......

Nikon for once announced a new product release and actually had product to ship, Oh my gosh, a real first, isn't it refreshing.

For myself other than weight or size, a brilliant thing, there is absolutely no advantage of having a Z8 over a Z9.

For myself i will stay with the Z9 over the Z8 because of,
a) battery power capacity
b) built in grip with buttons across the bottom,
c) overall balance and especially feel.
d) same dual card type capacity, for me critical more often than not.
e) i am looking more at glass rather than duplicating the Z9

Again for traveling or hiking i can see the benefit of the Z8...........well done Nikon.

I do hear the initial take off is a little underwhelming ?, but that may be location or zone defendant, usually things pick up a little.
Its fair to assume some people may be wanting to sell off their exiting Z6,7, D850 or some gear ? first.

I think the new and minimum specification bench mark has been set with the Z8.

As i understand Hogan was right in saying, you will not want to go back to any other Z camera after the using the Z9, that said, it would be reinforced also now with the Z8.

Now if you were contemplating selling a Z9 it may not be as easy or sweet as it was previously.

Exciting times ahead, happy days for all........

Only an opinion
