Z9 and noise

I learnt a few years ago to keep an eye on Brad Hill's blog, and he continues to deliver. We can expect his field testing to include some reliable comparisons to D6, Z7 and Z6.... BC's temperate rainforests and coasts are an ideal location to stress test low light performance and the AF system on Canadian wildlife.
His tests are exhaustive, and with top end Nikons, he uses the best of Nikkors

"23 Nov '21: Nikon Z 9 & 100-400mm f4.5-5.6S Arriving This Week!
I had it confirmed yesterday that Nikon Canada is sending me a shiny new Nikon Z 9 and a Nikkor 100-400mm f4.5-5.6S for testing purposes this week. ..."

The Z9 will likely on par with all other current-ten cameras. The primary source of noise is no longer "electronic" noise from the camera circuitry but rather photon noise (noise created by the random way photons strike the sensor). Most current cameras have knocked electronic noise levels down as far as possible so you won't see anything extraordinary either way with noise (good or bad) compared to the competition. I'd be surprised if there were more than a third of a stop difference one way or another for most normal ISOs.

That is one thing I notice with the Sony A1 is a little different noise "pattern" than D850 for instance. It seems to me like Nikon is a little bit "cleaner" is this my imagination? I don't know how to describe it unfortunately....

when scaled, i didn’t notice the a1 substantially worse than my z6ii, but it was “different”

Nikon noise does seem like it's a littler easier to clean up with noise reduction software. Not sure about the pattern, I don't see a ton of difference I guess.

May be A1 requires a different kind of noise reduction software>i am sure Topaz & others are aware of the issue & will bring out some thing soon

You are right. Matt did a test on bird eye AF and uploaded some raw images of birds shot at higher ISOs (i think 4000 ~ 5000 range) and when i looked at those raw files on NX Studio, turned off all the picture control settings etc., they were nice. Very similar to D850/Z7, probably a very slightly nicer noise pattern perhaps.

Matt Granger took his video about ISO performance down. This test wasn’t representative because of technical errors. So this statement is somewhat worthless.

A Nikon rep here in germany said that the Z9 has better ISO performance and better dynamic range than the Z7/Z7II, due to the new processor. I think Ricci said something similar in his review.
