Z9 firmware wish list

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I’m curious, for those using Nikon’s Z9, now that version 2.0 has been released, what is still on your wish list for future firmware? I know some would like smaller form factor and some of you would like a Sony/Canon label slapped on, but curious what others think it’s lacking that could be updated/changed through software?

I‘m guessing prerelease and 30fps in Raw are on most lists.

1) Multiple RSF lists so you could have 2 or 3 buttons assigned to different lists without jumping around the Banks.
2) Option for "toggle" feature on some of custom button features. My #1 request would be FX/DX toggle...no push/scroll
3) 30FPS RAW even if in HE* and not L. Comp.
4) 20FPS Precapture RAW (even if just in HE*)

Hardware changes for Z9II:
1) Addition of one or two extra back buttons in horizontal line with the current AF-ON button
2) Addition of a 3rd scroll wheel so that one can have Aperture, SS and ISO all on a dedicated wheel without an ISO button
2) a). If not a 3rd wheel then option to have ISO on the rear command dial and the ISO button assigned to Aperture (push/scroll like ISO is now).
3) Higher resolution and greater magnification EVF

1. Definitely need multiple RSF lists so they can be assigned to different buttons especially now that we have hold added.

2. As a BBF user I'm thinking more and more of needing the ability to configure the red record button as a release button so that you could say set the normal one to be single shot and the red one to be 20 or 30fps so you could instantly decide what you wanted. I just hate the amount of culling needed now with spraying all the time. Its really hard to smoothly press the shutter button without 3-4 shots.

3. I still don't understand why the flash will not fire unless you have the shutter sound turned on. Maybe they just wanted to make it consistent with Z6/7 line even though there is no physical limitation on the Z9 since it has no mechanical shutter.

4. I would also like a toggle ability to switch focus modes between those you have set as your favorites. I find pushing a button and rotating the wheel to be slower than the toggle method in real world use.

FW

1) i need to look over the list and see if it's already on there, but i'd like a way to have it lock out the portrait controls when in landscape orientation (and probably the other way around, but that generally hasn't been a problem for me).

2) all the usual suspects. i'd like to not have restrictions about using raw file formats for 30fps and maybe even 120fps and pre capture. i'm fine if at 30fps my buffer is much smaller. obviously 120fps isn't going to work at the larger raw formats in any meaningful way, but may be HE might for a period. pre capture is the big one, i only need 1/10 - 2/10s to make it worthwhile.

3) i'd like an HE format that is lossless (HE**? HE++? :-D). that might not be possible in firmware. i don't know if they use an FPGA or if it's fully baked. at least i THINK i want this. :-D it would be interesting to compare file sizes and encoding times between conventional lossless compressed and ticoraw lossless.

4) i had a weird one. i think it would be possible to do shutter speed bracketing. that is to say, have it apparently take the same image at different shutter speeds. in reality behind the scenes it would probably be dividing your "slowest" exposure by the number of images you requested and building you merged images for increased image fidelity. the idea here is that we are often trying to figure out the lowest shutter speed we can to avoid motion blur. it seems to me without a shutter, we could do this "in software". bonus points if it can detect the motion blur and just give you the slowest speed without blur.

5) software defined focus range limits. you know you want them. gimmie.

6) option to see DoF calculated in metric/imperial units. my understanding is some lenses can calculate range, so they should be able to give us numbers instead of the dumb little bar graph.

7) opportunistic backup. i'd like to be able to shoot to a single card and have that card back up to the second card "in the background".

8) subject priority exposure. leverage the camera's knowledge of what in the frame is the subject and expose for that. i know that there is a bias already for humans, but i don't shoot humans for the most part.

9) ETTR exposure mode. expose as far to the right as you can without losing anything. allow use of the exposure compensation to add dope if i want to expose a bit more to the right or left than the computed exposure

10) this might be a big ask, but have a mode where the evf outlines what it thinks is the subject. that would give you a better idea if what it's grabbing is actually what you want it to grab. obviously outlining a subject will take a lot more computational power than drawing a rectangle, but it would be nice.

11) better subject detection and af speed and accuracy. you can just leave this on the list, lol. despite it being good and getting better, there is always room for improvement, and focus is a huge thing for me. in my case, note dogs come in all shapes, colors, patterns and textures, and when they are in action they twist in all sorts of shapes.

HW

A) better high (extreme?) iso performance. i shoot in all conditions, and some of those are in poor lighting and since i'm shooting action, i have to shoot at high shutter speeds. the performance hit of about a stop vs the d6 hurts me here.

B) more dynamic range please. i know this may not be physic-ally be possible. but

C) maybe this could be done in FW. support for bluetooth headsets. for folks who want to run silent, but ALSO want to hear the shutter, using a headset is a great option. but it would be nice if we could do it without the wire.

D) recessed switches. i know this is dumb, but i managed to switch on the range limit on my 100-400 while shooting yesterday and you just don't notice until you miss a shot. i also manage to flip from photo to video sometimes and the control lock. i guess i'm a klutz.

E) see other people's suggestions about controls. i don't hate the controls, but i think they could be better.

F) built in m.2 nvme ssd slot(s). camera captures to the nvme drive, then you can copy to cfe card for transfer. this would work best with (7) where it could back up the contents of the nvme drive in the background.

Probably a lot more, i can't keep it in my head at once :-D But seriously tho, even with a long list, i'm super happy with this camera. it feels natural, confident and we've only known each other for a very short time but we're already making images i'm very happy with.
