Z9 photo thread

Thanks for the feedback. This was a tricky frame as I couldn't get to the eye level/ ground level as the the walking path was much higher than the water level. Due to the angle, I had a lot of harsh reflections on the foreground and background leaves so I added a couple of gradient layers on top and bottom to add a vignette to reduce the impact. Also, reduced the highlights to pull back some feather details on the egret ( I suspect this could be the culprit). Will try to post one with and without the Vignette in the nature photography critique section👍

Great shot, however, a little dark viewing on my monitor.

Back at it this morning, I get more impressed every day with the Z9. The following were shot this morning at 500mm, and F4. The series of the Heron is 80 photos using Auto AF with 5 lock-on, 77 of the 80 frames are absolutely tack sharp. Two stills are included below. The Sanderlings are really fast when running around, and, I find the Z9 on Auto AF does a find job. All handheld, between 1/3200-1/4000, ISO 800 F4 on manual. https://streamable.com/au4st4View attachment 30520View attachment 30521View attachment 30522View attachment 30523
The colours on the heron look amazing.

Thought I'd add two photos from my quick first outing with the Z9, 500mm PF, FTZii. Didn't have time to setup the camera so just default settings, trying auto area, wide area af with subject tracking. Had less than an hour and no diving osprey.

Very cold, lakes are frozen over, only have Sanderlings along the shore for subjects at the moment. Taken this morning using Auto AF; more and more I find myself relying on Auto AF and less on 3D for most images, and occasionally using manual focus or Dynamic if the focus falls far off subject.

few more from the weekend
all with the 600 f4
Still not very in love with the image quality, and feeling that everything above 3200 ISO is compromised and difficult to recover.
Still huge problems with dark birds, especially in low light.
I had a lyrebird, jumped up on a handrail in a bushwalk, 30% of the frame filled by the bird (please don't suggest me to go closer to a wild Lyrebird or you don't know what you are talking about).
One of those things that doesn't happen many times in your life because are very shy birds, bright background, and none of the AF I had selected on my 3 buttons, locked on the subject. I don't mean the eye, but at least the bird. Nothing. Even the single point.

Problem I'm starting to forget comparing with the DSLR, and I'm talking about the d850 that was my last. On the other hand could be good to accept what I have, but I'm having love/hate feelings with this camera.

The background rendition from 2nd till the last one is amazing

Page 112 af the reference guide about the low light AF
It says that to improve the AF in low light , set to ON custom setting menu d9
instead, the camera question mark says that improve only the luminosity on the live view in poor light.

Anyone knows if is effective on the shooting or only on the liveview?

Tough shooting conditions so not all of these are tack sharp at 1/1600s but at least it didn't lose focus to background...

The kingfisher sequence is brilliant considering the dull light & the size of the bird. I had difficulty in getting the pied kingfisher in focus in dull light when in flight. Its dull white & black feathers were nearly identical to the cloudy grey sky. I tried to acquire the focus in mid-flight. I couldn't see the perch it was sitting on...

What AF mode did you use? AF sensitivity?
