Z9 ship date

I keep waiting for my local dealer to call but nothing so far :(
My dealer said they got 12 NPS + 1 non NPS inthe first delivery. I’m #3 none NPS so hopefully the second delivery in January. I also ordered direct through NikonUSA in the first minute, but still nothing. I was told when I called Nikon, also first two weeks of January.

I got this from a vendor a few minutes ago so hopefully it’s good news.

I just called B&H as well as the other vendor I have a preorder with to get some information. They are both telling me there’s no expected date at this point to receive any Z9 cameras. I’m going to wait until February and most likely cancel my preorders at that point. The supply chain shortage and all that really don’t cut it at this point. There’s zero excuse for not communicating with your vendors or customers!

Im calling BS on what your venders are saying. I've already gotten my Z9 and I'm still getting emails from Nikon about Z9 shipments going out. ALL NPS orders placed up to Jan 3rd will be FILLED next week. You ordered from B&H.... along with thousands of other people. Turns out that was a huge mistake.

I have only talked to my "local" Idaho store ... 500 miles and part the road has been closed frequently the last 12 weeks. They have not filled all their NPS orders and have just been told to expect to get those in the next two weeks.

I have been getting parts and pieces as I can. I received the FTZ adaptor from B&H and Delkin Black cards from 2 places. I have a z1.4 TC on Fed Ex, a spare battery and charger that did not come up as backordered when I placed my on line order yesterday and a Z9 and Z100-400 on backorder from the same location. Overall pretty committed now ... for better or worse :)

Not sure what reason they would have to mislead me. Perhaps they don't know what they're talking about but it certainly seems odd they're telling me essentially the same thing. Are you NPS?

IN GENERAL, talking to a random customer service rep is more likely than not to get you a random answer. first, the person has to actually know what is going on, and most likely they don't. then, they have to understand how what is going on applies to _you_. then they have to care enough to spend the time to figure that out and communicate it. on top of that, there are company policies, that may not be aligned with getting you the information you wish which may lead them to give you the (generic) "answer of the day"

When the 500mm PF lens came out a few years ago, B&H was flooded with many more orders than any other vendor, and so getting the lens from them took longer for most buyers than the alternatives. Out of this experience, "go through a smaller, local dealer" sort of became the new conventional wisdom. I went through B & C Camera in Las Vegas and got a lens reasonably soon. I think the same thing has happened this time around. B & H suffers in this narrow sense from its popularity. They must get so very many orders, way more than the allotments from Nikon will satisfy.

This said, I think there is a certain randomness and chance aspect to exactly when people get their orders filled. Some people who are non-NPS are getting their cameras from this or that dealer. I ordered from Precision Camera in Austin in early July, and I did not get a camera from their first (very small) shipment. So it goes. Let's face it: some stores will tend to get the cameras to their regular, local customers or even to their friends first. This is the real world, with its tendency towards various minor forms of 'corruption'.

Precision told me that the pattern is that they get a very small initial shipment and then a few weeks later, a bigger one. So I am sort of expecting that my camera will be a part of this bigger shipment, probably mid-to-late January. If not, I confess I will be disappointed, but really, if I have to wait longer than that, fine. I have enough camera gear already and all good things are worth waiting for. Besides, the sooner I get the camera the sooner I have to pay for it, ack.

I have one of my preorders at a small local owned shop as well. I am unofficially on a third waiting list at another small shop. I figured with 3 I'd at least increase my odds of getting one lol. I still have my z6ii and z7ii so I'm not without a camera by any means. I just absolutely hate lack of communication, no matter what the situation is. Just who I am I suppose.

Like mentioned by others, you tend to get different answers from different people. Likely most honest answer is the one you received. Many were told by B&H customer service they would receive their cameras right away. Obviously they were more disappointed when it never showed up. When I placed my original order locally over the phone, I was told I was in the first 10 orders but they didn’t provide the exact position. I later visited the camera shop hoping they had a Delkin Black CFE B in stock. They did not, but I asked the lady who was helping me about my Z9 order and she told me she didn’t have a way to tell what my position was and she didn’t have any idea about ordering any lenses. Obviously not the best experience. I called a few weeks later on the 105mm MC and talked to a different associate. He was very helpful regarding the lens as well as without any issues told me my position on the list. Talking directly to a Nikon rep, I was provided information on the Z9 rollout that so far matches what we have seen. There are a lot of preorders and some components are in short supply so I suggest being patient; even though Nikon apparently has a history of not meeting demand. If you are in a reasonable position on the list locally (non NPS), you’ll probably have the camera in March at the latest.

Regarding current shortages, see the below pic. I’m not sure when I will be able to buy frozen French Fries.

I talked to my lokal camera store here in Norway regarding my preorder of the Z9 a couple of days ago. They haven’t got any cameras yet, but they are expecting a shipment with a few cameras at the end of this month. After that they have been told they would get about one camera per month going forward, they have over 120 preorders and feels the situation is like a nightmare. I don’t know where I am on the list, but I reckon I have to wait a long time before I get mine, even though I ordered the 28th of october as soon as they opened up for preorders… I don’t think there have been a shipment of Z9’s to my country yet…

I agree with everything you said but Nikon still should directly communicate delays, dates etc. I’m sure most of not all of us have products registered with Nikon and I’m constantly getting promotion emails from them. How about sending information about product delays and such. Not asking much, at least in my opinion.

In the case of talking to BH, well they already caught hell for giving out the wrong ship date so it wouldnt at all surprise me if they were told by supervisors to say they dont know. As for your local shop.... try offering the guy a $100 bill to see if you can move to the front of the line, if they say yes you know why they arent telling you anything. Yes I'm NPS but as I said I already got my Z9 and I'm still being kept in the loop regarding shipments. I find it hard to believe your venders didnt get the same emails.

I’m glad you got yours and hopefully some of the rest of us will get them soon. I understand you are a NPS but on the same hand I think it’s really crappy the Nikon don’t communicate with us the way they do with NPS members. My money is just the same as an NPS members money but perhaps I’m looking at it all wrong.

Of course all retailers, especially those with NPS orders coming, got the same email.
If you do not want some vague inaccurate and most likely misleading answer, do not talk to customer service.

the difference is that you (and i) don't have any direct relationship with nikon. for us non nps folks, our relationship is with the dealer we ordered from. the dealer has a relationship with nikon. nikon probably tells the dealer *something*, but it's up to the dealer to decide if and what they communicate to us.
