I'd love to see shots of your state's bird...Here's mine: Cactus Wren (on Cholla)

In Canada we have Provinces instead of States. The official bird of the Province of Alberta is the Great Horned Owl. Alberta is found north of the State of Montana. Hope you don't mind...

Forgive me…I’d forgotten that this site is global. I’ll edit my ask. As for your province’s bird…a wise choice!

Lucky you! They are simply unmistakably awesome. Our Cardinals in AZ aren’t as red…this guy is brilliant!
Thanks. He was also I think our winter time gray makes them stand out quite a bit. This shot was just after sunrise and if you look closely you can see a few snow flakes falling.

This Was shot on Dec 26. Here is a capture of his mate shot on the same day just a minute or two later. The bright red male gets all the attention but I think the females have a beauty all their own

Ah @jeffnles1 - you are a renaissance man! She IS beautiful!

legal residence
California's state bird (a1, 600 GM)
my other home, where my heart is
Alaska'a state bird (a7rIII, 100-400 GM)
Who knew…? (not me) It was the Audubon Society that selected the valley quail as an appropriate symbol of California and recommended its official adoption to the California Legislature.
The photo amazing how the breast colors match the moss on the tree limb. Such a regal bird.

Pennsylvania's state bird, the ruffed grouse. Unfortunately, due to west Nile virus it's rather scarce now.

@Woody Meristem, what a beautiful bird. I had no idea that WNV affected birds. I just googled and read a report from Michigan where they have studied the affects of WNV on the ruffed grouse. Crows, blue jays and ravens are the most affected. Now I have even more reason to take care of standing water.

West Nile Virus whacked the California-endemic Yellow-billed Magpie pretty hard but after some lean years they're making a comeback. My theory is that before West Nile the genetic variability in the magpie population included some birds that were more resistant than others, and these resistant birds survived to re-populate. Not a state bird, anywhere.

With any luck the Ruffed Grouse will have some resistant individuals too.
