Tennessee's state bird, the Northern Mockingbird. Even though it is Tennessee's state bird, I took this shot at my daughter's house in North Carolina...maybe it followed me there...

You made the mockingbird look so regal…especially atop the rooftop. They do show up probably in at least 1/2 of the US states and I wondered why Tennessee chose it as their state bird…This is what I found (which you probably already know): The state of Tennessee understood this bird as a true resident, so the northern mockingbird was designated as Tennessee's state bird in 1933.

Thank you, Lisa! It can be a beautiful bird and sing a beautiful song...but they can also be very mean and annoying. I so like listening to their concerts, though!

I do, too…EXCEPT when it’s at 2 AM in the spring. Last spring there was a persistent one singing right outside my window…I got up, went outside and had to shoo him off - to another neighbor…they are persistent!

Indiana's is also the Cardinal.

@FB101 really…who can resist the Northern Cardinal? There are 7 (seven!) states that have it as their state bird! We now have 2/4 (Kentucky and Indiana). Ok…would love to see shots of the Northern Cardinal from Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina! BTW, Frederic, your photo is remarkable. I love that he is in foilage that is a bit dreary…as it makes him pop even more.

Lovely collection thus far!

Norway's national bird is the white-throated dipper, an amazing bird with a fascinating lifestyle! This one is a juvenile i met this summer.

And then I found out that the county bird of Telemark county is the white wagtail, so here are two photos of this species, first a juvenile, then an adult.

Considering all the beautiful water in Norway it's a perfect bird. Dippers are def amazing!
The comps on the wagtails are really nice!
On a completely different note...Telemark County...is that where the ski style telemarking came from?

Yes, the dipper makes the perfect Norwegian national bird!
You are completely right about the skiing actually :) The guy (Sondre Norheim) who is regarded as the "father" of the telemark style is from a tiny place in Telemark. He actually moved to North Dakota in the 1880s and lived there until he died.

Here in British Columbia, Canada, we claim the Steller's Jay.
Wow, you guys have so cool bird over there! I guess I need to go on a bird photography holiday to the US some day 🤩

Thanks for starting this thread! I've really enjoyed seeing all the posts. By the way, the Cardinal is the state bird of my birth state, Virginia.
Hey Scott, I tell ya…the photographers on this site are first rate! I learn so much technically from all of you. Thank YOU!
