This shot is not very good at all, but one that I had to get quick. Not sure if this was the same bull elk that the rangers had to run out of the Mammoth Hot Springs cabins at Yellowstone the night before but the rangers thought it probably was. That night he ran several people up onto the steps in front of the dining room to avoid him, including my wife. The next night, the night of this picture, while tending his harem in the commons area north of the dining room, he charged a ranger’s vehicle, who avoided the charge by smoking his tires in reverse. A group of people being taught how to lower the flag & fold it, went flying, along with the flag, caught by a ranger. We were standing on one of the porches of a building on the commons as the bull looked our way, my wife says “he’s looking at me again!” & hid behind some columns of the building. As the ranger came up who avoided the bull’s charge of his vehicle muttered “he’s never done that before”. I guess because the elk couldn’t talk to us, maybe with his pose next to the sign it said all he wanted to say!
After some time he calmed down & left with his harem intact. The Ford Bronco ranger vehicle wasn’t able to lure any of his cows away! Quite the interesting evening.

Shrike takes over my monopod....
I know, exposure sux. I was photographing Bald Eagles in a tree & happened to look back at where I had propped my monopod & saw this guy.
Like Steve says, make a habbit of checking your exposure!

That Shrike looks kinda nice dark like that tbh. 😎 (y)
I have 2 Feisol CT-3472 tripods. Have you had issues with the collars on yours? They have been johnny-on-the-spot with replacements but I honestly should have a spent a few hundred more for RRS.

Thanks Hut.
Perhaps I've been lucky, but SFSG on the locking collars. That one's about 18 month old now so it's probably still on the new side, in the grand scheme. Honestly, the majority of my use of that monopod it from the vehicle. I wedge it between the drivers seat & door and with the Wimberly monopod head, it's great for managing the 600F4 for the drivers seat. Other than that, it comes with us when we fly (or used to, Lol) to save space - which was the case in the posted image.

That's great. You can spend all day looking around for cool birds like that Shrike and then one lands literally on your gear :)

Did you already pull the exposure up for this or do you think a bit of opening up of exposure/shadows along with maybe some Topaz noise reduction might work on this?

Great ironic moment!

A classic example of going down the checklist; exposure (check), composition (check), waiting a split second too long to trip the shutter (check).....

Thanks DR.

Yes, this was seriously underexposed. It's been opened up significantly, and thanks to the magic of AI Clear (this one is from last year) it looks as good as it does. DeNpoise/AI Clear is/are one of my favorite tools.
