OK, technically this guy isn’t out for his morning jog, he was coming in for a landing and they sort of “run” across the water as they decelerate. It’s actually really fun to watch.

The trick with this one was that flight shots weren’t very frequent so you have to be ready to go from flamingo portraits to flamingo flight shots pretty quick. In this case, I had my memory settings on my a1 ready for just such a scenario. I have my “mode 1” settings on my top dial set for action, so when I saw this guy coming in, I just twisted to “1” and instantly had all my default action settings ready to go. Sony A1, 600mm, 1/3200th, F/4 ISO 160, Zone Tracking.

BTW - one of the comments got me thinking - do you think this is about the right brightness or is it a touch too dark?

Running on water is a fascinating way of putting on the breaks. I guess after a few steps, the bird will sink no matter now light it is.

An absolutely stunning and well timed shot. Love every aspect.

Amazing adjustment of the dial!

Beautiful shot. It helps to know your camera so well and to be able to hit the right settings and capture something like this. I, for one, need a lot more work and practice in these areas. You provide the guidance in your books and in the learning fro mthis site to help me get closer.

Stunning image. I guess this is a manual setting, was it underexposed at all or was it later in the morning.
M + Auto ISO. The blue water kept it about right. I may have adjusted the brightness bit in post, but not by much.

That‘a an awesome shot Steve! I think the lighting is perfect. The flamingo jumps out at you.

@Steve, it looks good on a screen but I think if you were printing it you would have to brighten it up some. It could be just a bit brighter for my test. However, I've been seeing a lot of images recently with similar editing. Must be a "thing"now. Not sure.

I really like the image and the brightness thing would really be a matter of personal taste.

Beautiful image! I remember seeing so many of them in Lake Nakuru in Kenya, was there twice. Fifty or more thousand they said but I didn't count them! lol

Looks about right for brightness or the tail would be too hot! Just my opinion anyway!

I like the brightness and subject separation. On a lot of my images, after tweaking everything to my liking, I then bring down the exposure to darken the background a bit, then use the object selection tool to bring the subject back up to the previous level. I love the level of brightness on this one.
