Here is my first attempt to use Focus Shift with the Nikon D850 and then focus stacking with Helicon Focus. Lens was a Sigma 150mm macro, f 5.6 1/400 and ISO 640. 36 images were used for the focus stacking.

This is a very nice stack, but I think it could be improved in post by darkening and blurring the background. The pod to the left of the upper lily is distracting.

I don't think 36 images are needed for the stack. I presume you only sent images of the flowers that were in focus to Helicon. What settings did you use in the D850 for the stack? I have been doing quite a bit of stacking of some day lilies in my yard and use a step size of 3 and take 15 or 20 shots. Usually only 10-15 shots are needed. Here is an 11 image stack using Zerene Stacker with the D850 and the Sigma 180 mm f/2.8 macro at f/5.6. I blurred and darkened the background, but the image still needs some work.

Keep up the good work and have fun!

Bill. Thank you for your comments which are very helpful. This was only my first try with Focus Shift. I'm not sure, but I think I used setting of 4.
I couldn't agree more with darkening and blurring the background.
Your image of the single flower is beautiful.
I plan to go back to the gardens and do better.
I played around with my image. By now means perfect, but better

Beautiful stack. Especially for a first try. I am dabbling in stacking too, and I am using the D850 and a focus rail. Both are fun ways to stack macro.
Thank you for posting

For most stacking situations, you will be better off using the D850 focus shift facility to focus by turning the focusing ring rather than using a focusing rail. The rail comes into its own when stacking small objects about the size of a raisin or smaller. For really small objects such as small insects a motorized rail such as the Stackshot or WeMacro is invaluable.

For a good discussion of ring vs rail see this article on the Zerene web site:
