Hornet knocks down Tiger Swallowtail and devours all but the wings in a few minutes.

Very sharp photos, nice!
Thanks, with the D40X not so much. Just recently upgraded to the D7500 so looking forward to the coming butterfly season with better camera in tow. The D40X does pretty good job so it is not fair to blame the camera on my out of focus eyes. Easy to blame the camera :) ........ I can see it now, but honey, I needed to spend $$$$$$$$$ to get the butterfly in focus as my bags are packed and put on the front door step :censored:

No sense starting a new thread, adding to the existing picture. I welcome anyone to add on, all pictures welcome.

Wonderful photographs of butterflies. D o you shoot raw? Check out the background of #3 above compared to #2 and 4. The image quality of #3 is not nearly as pleasing. Without capture data I can only guess as to the reason. Much higher ISO? Use noise reduction s/w. Extreme crop? or ???? Your images are good, but perhaps could be better with different processing.

No, these were shot with D40X long before I even knew what a raw file was, these are JPEG and even worse they were shot in the GREEN auto mode. Looking forward to getting out with the D7500 shooting in RAW and some knowledge after reading Steve's book on metering.

Another 5 to add to the collection, D40X 18-200mm f3.5

Wowee! So many different kinds. Where are you shooting? US? Or? I shoot with a D7500. You’re going to love it.
Yes I am looking forward to using the D7500 on the next round as almost all of these were shot with the D40X. There are several butterflies that are local and taken in my backyard, the other were taken at Brookside Gardens in Maryland. I believe Brookside gardens breeds species from around the World. A lot of these butterflies I have never seen outside Brookside Garden.

Time to add just a few more, these are native to Maryland

Love the pictures here.
I'm still developing my technique with butterflies. I practice at the Bronx Zoo's Butterfly Garden, which opens again in April. :sneaky:
My tip, seeing some of the darker butterfly images here is to use a Lume Cube panel on your flash shoe. I started using one with the provided diffuser cover and I think it opens up the dark areas. I think it should help even outdoors. I shoot with a D780 and Nikon 105 2.8 Macro.
Best to All,
Vinny

Thanks for the tip, never heard of a lume cube panel. I will definitely check it out. Short of a few photos, all were taken with a D40X 18-200mm f3.5, in full GREEN AUTO mode, jpeg, all the sins that could be made. Recently upgraded to D7500 to use with a Nikon macro 40mm f2.8. Like you, I am looking forward to this season, armed with Steve's book on metering, and shooting RAW, never look back at the green mode setting ever again :) I planted years ago several butterfly bushes of different colors and they live up to their name, not only butterflies but Hummingbirds as well.

They have a few models but I went for the basic unit.
