Nice set of shots Dan. Some great perspectives.
Thanks, Bill.
Very, very! nice series. Focal lengths aside, I just love the expression, look in the eyes, of the Brown Bear in that first shot!
Thanks, Steven. That shot was actually taken with the 200-500mm. That bear fished the stream quite a bit right beside where I was set up. I didn't like the shots I was getting zoomed out at 200mm so decided to zoom in and see what I could do.
Great series of shots. Am always a sucker for filling the frame with critters. Did you use a wide angle lens for the last one?🤣
Thanks, Marcus. Full disclosure that last image is a full resolution crop out of a 36MP frontal portrait/head shot of a bear taken at 500mm.

Funny, I made that crack, Dan, thinking a bit about this image (full frame, no crop) that I took in Katmai a few years ago when I actually did have my 15-30mm f2.8 on my D750, specifically trying to get some "wildscape" shots. I was on my knees when this young sub adult just started galloping, seemingly right towards me. Of course, he was just focussed on the spawning salmon and my guide who was literally hovering right over me calmly said, "keep shooting, keep shooting". As you can see, the river here at low tide is just inches deep and the salmon just kept coming (this was in September). I could barely hold the camera I was shaking so hard. At 30mm, 1/250, f8, ISO 560, it is hard to convey just how close he/she was. I will also say that my guide really knew his stuff too because this bear was not remotely interested in us...it was all about the fish.

I love it when they're all fluffed up like that. I tell people all the time that during the salmon run the bears show about as much interest in people as they do to rocks and bushes. That looks like Geographic Harbor?

Stellar photos, Dan! Love the detail in all of them.
Glad you enjoyed them, Mike.
Point well taken. Nice shots!
:)
An excellent example of why sometimes a great zoom lens makes the day!!
My typical setup on a serious shoot is a long prime on tripod and a second body with a long zoom on a strap. When they get inside the range of the prime I switch off to the zoom. Then when they get within 200-300mm range of full body shots I usually go back to the big prime and start shooting portraits/close ups.
