Interesting that our elk in South Dakota still have their antlers. In Colorado they have already shed theirs and started to regrow.

Nice shots, especially the elk closeup, and they whet my appetitie for more. We will be visiting our daughter in Longmont and May and plan a few excursion up to Estes and RMNP plus others. These shots just make me excited for the coming trip. Also plam to meet up with MalcolmP from this site and we will do a little shooting together hopefully.

Thanks. I really enjoy visiting our NP's prior to the annual influx of people. I hit Tetons, Yellowstone and RMNP once or twice a year. This is a favorite time for me. You're likely aware of how busy it can get in May and June. I try to drive through the gates 1.5 to 2 hours before sunrise. There are a lot less folks walking in front of you at that time of the morning. Enjoy your visit!

I found these two bull elk again this evening. They must be buddies. I got both side views and a straight on shot of their new antler growth. So cool that those blood enriched pedicles will grow into 3+ foot long antlers, encased in velvet, and then harden and get rubbed clean. All in just a month or two.

Heading out to Colorado for two weeks starting on 4 May. Our daughter lives in Longmont and we plan to spend meaningful time in RMNP. Your phots are very well done and will be a reminder/inspiration for our visit.

Thank you very much! Enjoy your visit! As I mentioned previously, your best plan is to drive through the gates while it’s still dark. Have a plan on where you want to start your day from, and while I love viewing the huge vistas, I tend to work on capturing smaller, more detailed pieces. It’s a wonderful park with lots of photographic opportunities. I look forward to seeing your photos!

I just arrived at Badlands NP about an hour ago. It’s raining and blowing pretty hard. I am after some different views. Hopefully I’ll find some big horn sheep hunkered down this morning. Luckily BLNP is only an hour from my home.

Imagine the energy stores that are used to grow the antlers. How much grass does an elk need to grow a set of antlers?
