This is a freshly emerged Widow Skimmer dragonfly. Some of the detail in the compound eyes was lost due to compression to get below 1mb but the intricate pattern of the eyes is still present. For anyone who may not have seen a widow skimmer or they don't live in your area, the second photo is a shot of this same one after the wings dried out and it was getting ready to take its maiden flight (well, it's a young male so maybe not maiden :) ).

Also, some may ask why such a high F stop and fast shutter speed? The wind was blowing pretty hard and the little blades of grass and reeds upon which they were sitting were moving a lot. The high shutter speed helped freeze movement and the smaller aperture gave me a little cushion in focus due to the blowing grass. Is ISO 8000 on a D500 optimal? Hardly but it works for those times when getting the shot is more important than not getting the shot.
[edit to add some info about exposure settings for these shots]
