The sheer number of birds was mind boggling! A bit noisy too. We were advised to keep our mouths closed while shooting up, at it was common to be "blessed" by the birds (and we were.)

I think it is only during nesting season. Svalbard is in the Arctic circle. I was there in June. The cliffs are covered in snow and ice in the winter.

In this photo these birds are still waiting for their cliffs to emerge from the remaining snow.

I really like that first image showing the scale of the cliffs versus the inflatable.
And they just keep going higher! :)

It's impossible to really show the size of these cliffs in a photo. They are several kilometers long and 100 meters high. There are also glaucous gulls and kittiwakes on these cliffs. Drifting in the zodiac was a lot of fun!
