The second shot was early in the morning (Yesterday) and a mist or swirl of smoke spewed out from its mouth with each call. Too bad it did not show much in the photo. The shot needs a little more DOF overall anyway. :confused:

In the second photograph, the concern is not so much the depth of field but the +1.7 stop correction you applied.
The breath of the bird belongs to the highlights.
By overexposing by +1.7 stop, you make it disappear in this surplus of light that you bring ;)
 
Both shots are quite nice, although I prefer the 1st a bit more, as in the second shot the bird is looking away and the specular highlights on the leaf are a bit distractiing. Still, I like them both - well done.

Yeah, this is a tough one because Red-winged Blackbirds are SO black that you have to overexpose to get anything but a very, very black bird. :)
