Watching the animals forage is entertaining and educational. Here are a few with some surprises. First up is from last week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I watched a willet poking in the surf, not sure what was on the menu. He caught a sand flea (or whatever they’re called) and swallowed it after getting it positioned just right. The little crustacean fought a losing battle…
A couple weeks ago a raccoon climbed a cedar tree in our yard, seemingly focused on something in the branches. I did my best old guy with arthritis sneak to get a tighter shot. Wouldn’t ya’ know it, he spotted me immediately… ….and posed with lunch in-hand! JUNIPER BERRIES… Who knew? Turns out red cedar is actually a juniper species. I didn’t know it even had berries. I did know juniper berries are used to make gin…. hmmmmm.
…So the mighty eagle is next… This one foraging in the creek behind our house… No platter size fish today! Seriously ….. a minnow! Must be dieting…
Last and certainly most impressive… is a blue heron that has taken over our dock. Somehow he captured a large gizzard shad and spent some time deciding what to do next. An eagle actually tried to steal the fish but the heron out maneuvered the thief. We watched as the heron juggled the shad and eventually swallowed it whole…
