I thought it would be fun to see others people’s first photos of 2024. I’ll start it off with mine, for what it’s worth…it was another dull, grey day.

I took a drive around the farmlands surrounding my town on New Year's Day just to get out for a while and shake the cabin fever (had to get my photography fix in - I hadn't taken any pictures recently).

This Red-tailed hawk had just finished eating something since there seemed to be some pinkish blood on its breast feathers. A flock of doves were roosting in another tree close by.

Shutter speed was higher than it needed to be because I expected the bird to fly any minute.

Very nice!

I went out in the morning to the location where I can view our local bald eagle nest from a distance. I didn’t see much activity at the nest and turned around. I was surprised to see the female incoming with new home improvement items! Fortunately I was holding the camera. It was a nice New Year’s Day.

Lovely! I can’t help noticing how worn some of the flight feathers are.

Thanks KP. I agree. Both the female and male have been pretty active. Egg(s) in the nest around 12/19. Their normal hunting area is a couple of miles from the nest, which they visit every other day or so. They have been together as a pair for about 9 years now, as far as I can determine. Good parents.
