Yes, f/9 would not be my first choice, but if it meant shot or no shot? I would give it a try! That being said, I have found that f/7.1 on that lens works well when you want to ensure a little extra DoF. 🙂
But, with the 1.4TC the widest you can shoot is f/9. You lose light by adding the 1.4 tele converter. The lens plain wide open is 6.3. 7.1 is not an option with the 1.4 tele converter.

I should have been more clear… yes, you are absolutely correct regarding the widest aperture being f/9 with the 1.4x converter. I meant that when shooting with the lens alone, I will often stop down a bit to f/7.1 in order to get all of my subject sharp if it is close. So f/9 is only a stop away from what I have sometimes shot.

Thanks for clarifying. What you say makes lots of sense.

I had the shutter speed up as I was expecting it to take off. It never did.

There are quite a few nice shots here! I think this is a fitting place for my first post on this forum. My first proper photo was from the 3rd of January but I only now got around to reviewing it. It isn't the absolute best, but a good start for the year I'd reckon. Also, it is something different since I haven't seen many pictures from Europe in this thread: a long-tailed tit.

Still a nice photo, glad you posted! I love seeing photos of birds from across the pond. We all have so many cool birds and I'm just amazed at the variety of birds all over the world.

My first post on these forums and one of my first wildlife photo of 2024. Happy new Year to everyone .Hopefully I followed the recommendations for picture size (1200 wide)
A small flock of back -winged stilts (at least this is what I think) took off suddenly and performed a complete circle before landing at the spot they left from, probably scared by something.

Thanks for posting here, Fiete! Your bird is similar to our Black-capped Chickadee, but prettier, I think! A very good way to start the year!

Nice catch! That would be a very rare bird here.
