Last winter there were many northern cardinals, starlings, and chickadees at my feeders. I’ve seen substantially fewer this winter.
Here’s a newly fledged northern cardinal from a year ago. The others I tried to upload are too large.

Three summers ago I was camping in the mountains of Alberta and we awoke each morning to silence -- maybe a distant jay or two. It was startling.
