Great capture! Well framed to show the difference. Ostrich and their eggs are large, but the little ones are stll tiny in comparison. Same with most birds, but the differrence here is visually impressive

Awesome images. I especially like the second one. One question. The lens used is listed as below. Do you have a 2x teleconvertor?? Thank you! Jimmy
  • Lens: 400.0 mm f/2.8
  • Focal Length: 800mm

Thanks Guys, much appreciated.
Joe - the baby ostrich is larger than many birds in itself, just makes the 6' size of the adult more impressive
Jimmy - 400mm f/2.8 plus 2x TC. I bought the lens for small birds, and other things, but 400 is useless at 60 m on even egrets and herons. I always shot it with a 2X TC. Got the 600 f/4 then and nearly always had a 1.4 TC on it too. Also, those wereD3S times, small frames, 12 Mpx. I used the 2x TC on my 70-200 F/2.8 but the IQ was no good - got rid of all and now only use a 500 PF and the 80-400.

Thank you for the explanation. I use the 500 PF on a D850 with and without a 1.4 tele extender. Love them. However, for a long while I was curious if my lens/body were matched with regard to AF adjustment due to many soft focus issues. So I finally went to a pro shop and they put both on a rig and found that my 500 PF was focusing ahead and with the teleconv. behind. They made the adjustments in the camera body so I am all set now. I do notice a difference. Many more keepers. The process was just too complicated for me. It cost $40.00 for the lens and the same for with the tele on. Worth it!! Also saved me from sending the bodylens/teleadapt to Nikon to do the same. I am headed out today to look for Eagles along the Mississippi in MN/WI near Redwing/Wabasha, MN and Maiden Rock, WI. I use the 500PF 95% on the D500. I will add the 1,4 TC if the subject is far, and if I shoot from my beanbag set-up in the car, the images are sharp. Just sationary images, the moving ones and the TC does not work.
This is a 60% crop away of a leopard cub high on the escarpment.
I am happy, because without the TC, I would never have seen it this clearly.

My 500PF and tc are married to my D500. Gets a little cranky with BIF if they are near the water but otherwise I’m very happy with the results. It’s a great combo.

OK, reporting back in! Visited all sites planned today but only found one eagle and one Turkey Vulture soaring right over my head for a long time today. Nikon D850 with Nikon 500 PF with Nikon TV-14E III attached. Just a gorgeous day today.

Great. I love the dipped neck shots!
Second one is also my favorite. Great framing which definitely helps to tell your story. I am impressed you were able to get to ground level so well. KKR
Great shots of those Ostrich.
Really nice and love how you have shown the difference in size!!

Ralph Agree with the D500/D500PF combo, Love it too.
Jimmy, sucks when the models do not show up, but that won't stop us going back!
