Combo Nikon FTZ + Z TC-1.4x

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

It won’t work because you can’t put a large round peg into a small rectangular hole!😆
On the bright side, both the TC14EII and III work extremely well with the Z8 and 500PF. They can also be had on the used market at very affordable price.
I don't know where the rectangular hole is in this set.
I want to connect the Nikkor AF-S 500mm PF to the FTZ converter. Can I?
Then I want to connect this set to the Nikon Z TC-1.4x. Can I?
Finally, I want to connect the resulting set to the Nikon Z8. Is this technically impossible?

My question was about the functionality of such a set. Has anyone tried it?

Yes, you can connect the 500 PF to the FTZ and then the FTZ to the Z8

No. The Z TC's only work with Z lenses. You'll need the F-mount TC. So your setup will be 500PF -> 1.4x F-mount TC -> FTZ -> Z8

Yes

No.

Yes, because you can't use a z tc with the ftz.
My question was about the functionality of such a set. Has anyone tried it?
No, because it's not physically possible.

Finally, I want to connect the resulting set to the Nikon Z8. Is this technically impossible? YES, as long as you don't have the Z TC-1.4x in the mix.

Has anyone tried such combo kit nikon FTZ + Z TC-1.4x to connect Nikon AF-S 500mm PF to Nikon Z8?
The 'issue' is you can't put a z TC on an F lens. If you want to TC the 500 pf you'll need to get an f TC. That combo works (great in fact) with the FTZ to attach the combo to a Z camera (Z8 in your case; Z9 in mine -- I've used the 500 with a (f) TC, and ZTC, on my Z9 a lot).

Sorry, I didn’t mean to be a smart a**! I assumed you have all the components in question and could see that the FTZ has a rectangular rear opening and that the round, projecting front element of the Z TC won’t fit into it. As others have stated, this combo will not work.

Thank you very much for the explanation

The F mount 1.4x TC III works very well with the 500 mm PF, the FTZ/FTZII and a Z body. I used my 500 mm PF and the 1.4x TC III extensively on a Z7, Z7II, Z9 and Z8. The combination worked better on my Z bodies than on my D500 and D850. The 1.7X TC II and 2x TC III also work with the 500 mm PF, the FTZ/FTZII and a Z body.

I no longer have the 500 mm PF. It was my most used wildlife lens for a long time. I sold it when I got the Z 600 mm PF.

Thanks. This is very helpful information. I tried using the 500mm PF with the D850 but most of the useful AF options at F/8 don't work. Could the Z8 have similar problems?

Luckily the Z8 and other mirrorless cameras don't suffer from that same f/8 AF system limitation. I use the 500mm PF with a 1.4x F mount TC frequently and the AF system works very well in ways it did not with my DSLRs.

I agree with Dave.

I found that the 500 mm PF and 1.4x TC III with the FTZ/FTZII focused fine on a Z body, especially a Z9 or Z8. I’ve photographed birds in flight with that setup, including gulls, mergansers, other ducks, terns, bald eagles, great blue herons, great egrets, trumpeter swans, osprey, surf scoters, cormorants and a few others. I’ve even photographed barn swallows flying low over the water on the Mississippi River with the 500 mm PF and the 2x TC III on an FTZII on a Z9. Not quite as snappy as with the1.4x TC III, but if I could keep the swallow in the frame, the Z9 usually got focus. But at 1000 mm, keeping a swallow in the frame was a challenge.

I attach a Nikon FTZ adapter to my Z8 and then a TC-14E III 1.4x to the adapter and then atttach this to my AF-S Nikkor 500mm. Everything works fine---except for stuffing the entire set up into the lens case, which is no big deal.
I have no performance complaints and for me it is a satisfactory poor man's solution to get increased focal length. I shoot hand held almost exclusively and that gets to be a challenge and a consideration but overall I recommend this set up.
I hope this answers your question.

The part that extends from the 1.4x and 2x Z teleconverters doesn't fit into the FTZ.
Also the mount wont allow it if it did .. 🦘
Pls read my post directly above yours and tell me what I am missing. I have been doing that for about a year or so now using a TC-14E III 1.4x. Works fine.
Tks

Has anyone tried such combo kit nikon FTZ + Z TC-1.4x to connect Nikon AF-S 500mm PF to Nikon Z8?
As other's have pointed out, the Z 1.4x TC *cannot* be used with the 500 pf, it is physically impossible.

In another thread, you asked about the 1.4x TCIII.

You definitely *can* use the 1.4x TCIII with the 500pf and the FTZ adaptor on any Z camera - for an excellent 700mm f8. The Z cameras do not have the AF constraint of f5.6 maximum aperture that DSLR's have where the AF is quite compromised due to the lower light amount reaching the AF sensor.

I have very successfully used the 500 pf and 1.4x TCIII combo for fantastic results on my Z8 and Z9. See this thread with some sample images:
