With the transfer of ownership to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in 2022 there will be more bison overtime as I doubt they will be culling/harvesting bison as the NPS has done in Yellowstone. I will need to add that to my bucket list.

Has anyone visited the refuge in the winter? I know that the main road is not kept plowed but I would chance it.

A very nice series…. I have photographed Elk on the National Bison Range several times and 2018 was one of the years. In fact that photo of the 7x8 pt might have been the biggest Bull on the Range that year and the US F& W Biologist said he was named Harold. I learned this year while photographing during the Elk Rut that Ol’ Harold was sadly Poached in 2022.

I was there this September for the Elk Rut. I was told by a Tribal Member the Bison Roundup is now every two years. Whereas US F&W held the roundup yearly during the first week of October. The Bison were plentiful this year however, sadly the Antelope were very very few and in discussion with a managing Tribal Member they have incurred a serious predation problem since taking over management of the Range. They are said to be addressing the Coyote problem.

We also have photographed the Bison range over the years and have a number of images oh “Hearold” he could get awfully cranky at times during the rut. Although known for the bison and elk we spent more time there with mule deer up high and the black bears along the creek on the back side of the range.
