Pretty sure everyone will have been in the same position many times, spending time getting everything setup and the short burst just misses or the subject just will not strike "the pose" for that special result.
This is one of mine from yesterday, waited 20 minutes or so in the late afternoon light, dark background etc, etc for a Superb Fairy Wren to land on a rock.
Probably a female (male in breeding plumage preferably), head twisted (prefer head in line with body not twisted away), minimal Post Production.
Like the jump though.
Almost but not quite.

I was set up to shoot Osprey fishing at a local lake. There had been some action way out in the middle approximately 1/2 mile (about 1km). away. I was hoping for the schools of fish to come closer. As I sat and waited, I heard wing beats behind me, turned around to capture an Osprey diving for a fish...... Only to be faced with a ring-billed gull instead. Different day, same lake I did manage to get some Osprey splashing down.

Oh yes, I have many "if only" shots over the years. This is one I particularly regret as I had just moved my AF point for a previous shot and forgot to recenter it. Had I done so, I would have had a memorable shot. This is a Gorgeted Sunangel getting dorked by a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird.

I have a whole "Bin" library of these shots
, sadly upon sorting/grading most go directly to the bin.
The Hummingbird scenario above
@bajadreamer really is one of those
if only shots!
Oopps.... not your classic Bald Eagle enjoying his meal photo. The sub adult surprised me as much as the Adult on the Rock.

Yup, they were on a collision course and I was a split second late to the party. That said, I was in the midst of shooting a static eagle so my SS was 1/640 so it wouldn't have been a great shot anyhow even if I did see it happening in time.
