Including the original/crop picture of Loon taken from boat with Nikon D500 at 1/2000 sec/ 5.6, ISO 720 ( Manual with Auto ISO) with PF500 lens.
Interested in thoughts/recommendations. Thanks!

Both versions will work.
I would do some more enhancement on these images. To my mind the lighting is too subdued so I would brighten them up as well as set the levels. The whites on these birds need to be more crisp, and the water seems a bit dull.

Here's an example.

How do I brighten the picture up, make the whites whiter and bring some brilliance to the water with my camera settings? Haven’t gotten into much as it relates to “post” software applications. Have some familiarity with “Photos” on my IPhone, where I think I can do some of that. Appreciate your comments and enhancements!

Here is another picture I took recently and tried to do some editing on my IPhone with Apple Editing. Thoughts/suggestions!

In Apple Photos I always start with shadow recovery. I’m assuming you shoot in RAW. Tweek the highlights, I then add saturation to the photo. Not too much. I’ll then brighten if necessary, and then sharpen.

I increased exposure on your image, lightened the shadows while keeping an eye on the highlights to prevent them from going too bright, reduced the red channel and possibly increased the blue, and lastly I set the white point on the breast of the bird. Sometimes there is a color cast baked into the image ( white balance) that results in white not being pure white, but more yellow, red, green, etc. In the edit above you ended up with excessive contrast and a red/brown color on the back of the bird.

In order to successfully edit images from a high quality camera such as the D500 you need editing software that's up to the task. And then you need to experiment and play with the software. Practice makes perfect. I spend many more minutes editing an image than I typically spend with the camera to capture the image.

Thank you very much - very helpful!

Think this is better! It was a a very cloudy/overcast day when I took this picture. Have seen several members recommending +.7 for Exp Comp with the D500. Would you recommend a software to begin with?

I think it's safe to assume that the majority of photographers use Adobe Lightroom. It seems to be quite good enough for amateurs and professional photographers alike. Adobe Photoshop CS6 is a more capable, but more expensive option as well. You won't go wrong with either of those. There are also lower priced options such as Photoshop Elements. I'm not familiar with any other editors. I use Photoshop CS6 myself, but if I had to buy today I would probably go for Lightroom. It's good value for money.

Thank you very much! I do have Adobe Photoshop Elements that I use for organizing my pictures. Will take a look at Photoshop Lightroom. Think that has a monthly fee, so I may start with Elements and go from there!
