The appended article by Nikon is an interesting read

Its existence is rediscovered every so often, and the subject of this huge lens reappears as a 'Wow' thread in forums occasionally.... . And it also gets picked up by the photo press every so often: albeit they tend to quote - uncited - only snippets of the primary report (uncited). Grays of Westminster exhibited a copy of this rare, and expensive exotic in 2018. Made only on special order, a copy cost £53,000 in in the early 1990s.

The more relevant aspects of its story is that Nikon continues to utilize key innovations to maintain the quality of modern Nikkor Telephotos. It was under huge pressure that the Engineers achieved these breakthroughs in R&D and production: especially at the time (1989-1990).

Moreover, Susumu 'Genius' Sato was the primary designer of the 1200-1700mm f/5.6-8AIP IF-ED Nikkor, and his expertise was key to design the high optical quality of the early AF Telephotos. This continued into the E FL models, and he still works in Nikon:

”For example, the development of the 1200-1700mm led to the development of the first high-precision adjustment equipment specifically for large-diameter lenses used in camera lenses. This equipment is still used in the production of super telephoto lenses today....."
