A bag for Z8 with 24-70 lens

I preferer shoulder bag.
I'd consider this a sort of shoulder bag. They are worn cross-body.If you haven't done so already, take a look at the pics on B&H. If you have, and this isn't for you, it just isn't! No need for explanations. You are the only one who knows what works for you.
ThinkTank also makes some nice messenger style bags - might be worth taking a look on B&H.
Take care and have a great New Year

Probably a small sling bag (your post does not specify if your lens is the f4 or f2.8 version). When I select sling bag in the filters for camera bags at B&H, the huge number of choices is overwhelming. It is hard to tell from listed size or description what would be the right size. It might be easiest just to send them an email explaining your needs and see which bags they recommend.

I would go for a Domke bag for this combination. Advantage is the camera can stay hidden until needed. You. can also carry a few accessories in side pockets.

On the other hand for active shooting I would much rather use a Holdfast strap setup and allow the camera to ride at my hip.

I’ve used this for years and it’s perfect with the z24-70 f4 with z8 attached

Updated….this is the z8 with the z24-120mm f4 attached. The lens is 3cm, just over an inch longer than the z24-70 f4. I use the bag whenever we’re on a trip…its nice to have that extra protection plus it easily takes the 3 spare batteries and filter.

I bought a gitzo tripod in the uk recently and it came with the Gitzo Century messenger bag as a free gift. The bag wasn't on my radar and I wasn't in the market for one but it is probably the best shoulder bag I've ever had. Easily holds the z8 with 24-70 2.8. 14-24 2.8 and 70-180 and yet is still compact enough that it just looks like a normal non photography messenger bag. Seems to be really well made too.

Failing that, the Tenba DNA bags are quite good if a little boxy or Think Tank/ Peak Design might be a good option. Not been much of a fan of sling bags personally.

i wrap the camera & lens in a lens wrap or two and throw it in any bag i want. been doing that for a few decades and haven't had any issues. i've found regular backpacks to be more comfortable than camera backpacks. i've even gotten some padded camera inserts to use with regular bags. my favorite carry all bag for big road trips is a gun range bag.

Hi Milos,

First, as others have said, you need to try these bags to see if they work for you. Cross body works for me - single shoulder does not (people's shoulders can be very different angles - neck muscles make the shoulders slope more, although I've seen very strong gymnasts with very square, level shoulders).

I opted for the Peak Design 3L sling in black as a walkaround bag - it does not look like a camera bag:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1515260-REG/peak_design_beds_3_bk_2_everyday_sling_3l.html

It could easily just be carrying a water bottle or something mundane. The logo is not barely visible with that color (it is more visible on other colors).

I have Z7 not a Z8 but it will for sure fit a Z8. I have the Op-Tech wrist strap attached to the body. The 24-70mm f/4 fits very easily. The 24-70mm f/2.8 would fit pretty easily. I can fit the 14-24mm f/2.8 or the 135mm Plena (with hood reversed! but a little tighter fit) or the 105mm Macro. I think the 28-400mm will fit - it's only a couple of millimeters longer than the Plena, but haven't tried it. It would be tight but workable imo. The 600mm f/4 TC won't fit. 🤨

Additionally, I can fit the Z7 + 40mm f/2 AND the Nikon Monarch m7 8x30mm binoculars at the same time, which seems like tardis level magic err science!

P.S. Don't forget to click on Steve's affliate link before buying whatever it is you settle on ;) Cheers!

Hi MMO - it's a good question - I think @Steve should have the link in (a lot) more places <wink wink>

This is a good page for all the affiliate links - the list is halfway down the page:
https://bcgforums.com/pages/donations/

You should just be able to click any link to get to the site (BH, Amazon, etc.), then shop, and Steve should get the commision.

Cheers, and Happy New Year!

Thanks Dave. Next time I order from B&H, I'll do that. I could not figure it out for the life of me.

I see a Domke F-2 bag on sale today at BH in the Deal Zone. Is this the one you were talking about @wotan1 ? Looks like an "old" model plus "waxed canvas"? I'm not familiar with their stuff.

Those are the bags depends on size for what you are carrying. Waxed canvas is used a lot on outdoor gear very English. Their bags are typically shooting bags meaning they have wide straps for carrying over the shoulder or cross body. The top flap can open allowing access to contents while walking. Sturdy rugged bags they don’t scream expensive camera so don’t attract attention.

My only complaint is that if you load them down they can get heavy and strain the shoulder. Some of the gear carrying straps that I prefer ie holdfast and black rapid work better at distributing weight.

It doesn’t look big enough. According to their website, the depth is only 7.5 cm
can you share images of the z8 with the 70-180 attached? I’m always looking for the “right” bag. (My wife is sighing….😂😂)

Easily fits the 70-180 (attached) with hood retracted. It's a little tighter with the hood in shooting position but it still closes. I only own one camera so taking a pic of the camera in the bag is a bit problematic! I will see if I can use the phone camera later but I'm on my way out at the moment..

The Domke F-2 is a good all around size for many purposes.

I have used these bags for many years. They are designed for photography and are regarded as "shooting" bags meaning they are intended for use on an active shoot, they are designed to make it easy to access gear while carrying the bag on the shoulder. The bags are quite rugged and well-built and can last for many years of constant use.

The philosophy with these bags is convenient to use with side pockets and flap compartments for stowing accessories. These bags do not provide a lot of padding, the idea is if you need to pad your gear wrap them in individual wraps (Domke wraps) which are available in multiple sizes.

At one point I devised a waist strap and secured one of those bags to the belt with hooks. This meant a I had a decent sized waist bag to hold extra gear such as additional lenses.

I like the general design of these bags especially when working with moderate sized lenses and accessories.

A few times a year I need just my Z8 with 24-70 lens. Anyone has good recommendation for a good bag?
My favorite/go-to bag is available on Amazon. Lightweight hard case, waterproof, room for laptop if traveling and comfortable. Backpack style but has a good handle on it to put into car or overhead. Comes in a variety of colors. I have 3-4 packed for with different gear depending on what I’m shooting ( night, wildlife, landscape etc)

Of course, if you are walking around with just your Z8 w/ lens, you could always ditch the bag and opt for the Cotton Carrier, which I do find useful when the equipment itself is not too heavy or cumbersome with a long lens. Great for when I’m just out doing landscape, macros or when I don’t need my 600mm!
