A Goldenrod Crab Spider (Misumena vatia) ambushed this Cabbage White Butterfly (Pieris rapae) as I was trying to photograph the butterfly feeding in my neighbor's lantana bushes. Looking closely at the lingering butterfly, I saw that the unfortunate critter was in the clutches of a crab spider. Sipping nectar one moment; paralyzed the next. Interesting, female crab spiders, if moved to onto a white flower, will change their coloration to white within several days by withdrawing the yellow pigment revealing a white reflective surface underneath.
