just before sunset yesterday when i left the parking lot at work, squealing tires and burning rubber. i pulled into the refuge with a full stream of cursing cause the light was fading quick and the front part of the refuge was in full shade. this was my last chance to take photos for the foreseeable future - forecasted rain today and then stuck at work in a dispatch center from monday morning until the election is called wednesday morning (we'll have a presidential candidate in town) or the riots stop (not a political statement, in murdertown, usa they riot for fun).

i was driving the full 25mph max speed into the refuge just past the indefinitely closed visitors center (they better open before my annual pass runs out) and pay station i ran into this gorgeous guy, less than a quarter mile from the entrance to the refuge. talk about luck. and he was beautiful too. most of the foxes in the refuge are scrawny, mangy and look like drowned rats. this guy had a full coat and looked well fed. he stuck around long enough for me to get a few photos. i wasn't sure if any of the shots would come out because of how dark it was getting. it doesn't hold up under close scrutiny, but i think i can get a decent 11x14" print out of it.

Wow, great pose.
Kinda takes some of the sting out of the work frustrations, right? :)
oy, and a full moon halloween with mercury in retrograde on top of it all. i wasn't superstitious before i started dispatching, but it's all true. everyone goes crazy all at once. lord, let me make it through the week.

lovely fox
thanks callie.

beautiful shot.
thanks jeff.

Wonderful image of a beautiful fox and flattering light.
thanks nat. it was one of those rare moments where it all comes together.

Trust me I know the feeling... but think of it this way... if you were not at work... you probably would not have gotten this shot... and it's a winner.
true, very true. the ops room is only a few minutes from the refuge, and much closer than home. don't get me wrong, dispatch is a career, not a job. it's exciting and i love it - sometimes. but financially i'm really only working at the state for the benefits, which i get to keep when i retire. i make my money at a shop at the beach selling photos and other stuff. if i relied on my state job for money i'd be well below poverty level.
