Really like the grouse shot. We called them Partridge, or as my grandfather pronounced it "patrige," I spent a lot of time, and shotgun shells, chasing the critters.

Thanks. There are several types of grouse here, and partridge, as well, tho I believe the partridge in Alberta may be introduced species. When this guy slipped into the underbrush I tried to scare him up (love the sound) but the bush was too thick and wherever he'd scurried to he wasn't having anything to do with my game :)

Wonderful ! are you happy with the 180-400 ? I own a 600FL and a 70-200 S, i am on the process to buy an used 180-400 as an in-between range. So if you have some comments, it would be welcome !

My first big big lens and will give my impressions in a separate post at some point. I chose it over the 600 'cause I thought for a big lens newbie a zoom would be a good idea. Only really shot the lens one day so far and other than swithting the tc on and and I've stayed at the long end LOL

Very nice! Looks like that new kit is really working out.

My guess for the Yellowlegs is a Lesser, the key difference being the length of the beak. A Greater's beak is about 1.5x the width of its head and the Lesser's is about 1x. They are sandpipers, however, its not part of the name, so you have a Lesser Yellowlegs.

Looking at the grouse, it may be that a little more of the foreground is in focus than the background. Actually, they all seem to favor the foreground a bit, but the subject always looks good.

I've been won over by the calibration arguments. I have no where to do it inside with the distances required so it will have to wait.
