An older discussion topic from November 2023 resurfaced today. Cheaters in photo contests. Some of the responses pointed to egregious misrepresentation of the animals and the situation when the image was captured. That thread brings up a related issue worth discussion. Aviaries and Zoos.…. Are these venues, where the animals, be it mammals, birds, reptile, flowers, etc., captive in a natural setting, being misrepresented as ”wild”? Or, does it really matter at all….. I think it doesn’t unless you are submitting an image in a contest. They have rules…
The Aviary & Zoo topic came up with friends recently. I was asked how I found these birds and flowers during a trip to Costa Rica in 2017. “Did you have to trek into the jungle?” “Were there poisonous snakes?” “Was it dangerous?”……no…
Our guide brought us to an aviary with a large variety of birds, butterflies and plants landscaped in a natural fashion. The saturation of species in the enclosure seemed unnatural but photographic opportunities were everywhere. Almost overwhelming. Here are a few:
…a Violet Ear Hummingbird “ beautiful species….however, notice the 2 strings along a diagonal branch in the lower right….
….a gorgeous orchid….in the aviary
….a tocan…cool exotic bird….
These three, and many more, including rare butterflies, were taken in an aviary roughly 200ft. x 75ft. And all on level well maintained paths. When I show these and other images obtained at “showcase” venues I regret I couldn’t get them in a naturally authentic wild setting….not to be misrepresented going forward. But a lot of fun, practice and memories….How do other forum members feel about their images from aviaries and zoos?
