We were fortunate to be out in the jungle of Costa Rica at night when an Emerald Cicada hatch was occurring. We were able to set up 2 flashes around this cicada pictured here to provide backlight, as there was essentially no usable light under the jungle canopy; we found the cicada using flashlights. We watched the cicada hatch and timed the shot for the time when the wings were fully expanded, but still wet. The cicada was left on the branch with the pupa case and, after its wings had hardened, flew off.
