AF Point Illumination

Hi, just wanted to know if anyone has an answer for this issue that I'm facing. I'm currently using the D850 with BBAF(Back button Autofocus), and I assumed that the focus point would illuminate only when the camera was focusing. However, even when I half press the shutter release, the AF point still illuminates, even though technically the camera isn't doing anything. Is this just a Nikon thing, or am I doing something wrong?

Look under the Custom Setting Menu > Autofocus > Focus Point Options > Focus Point Illumination. You can turn it on, off, or have it in Auto mode.

Also, it's normal for them to light up like that in Auto or On when you press (or half-press) the shutter release, even with BBAF enabled. If you're in Auto and it's brighter, they won't light up - in dimmer conditions they do. "Off" shuts it off altogether of course.

Ok, thanks so much for the reply Steve! Been reading your autofocus books and the number of things I've learnt about my D850 and D500 was immense. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
