Is it really necessary to have the $$$$$$ prime lens vs the $$ to get the shot and can you really see the difference, except in you wallet?

Two pictures were taken with 35mm prime and two with the 40mm, which is which?

LOL, you cheated. Now you can see it does a good job, add to that I picked up the 40mm used on MPB.com for $165, looks new.

fwiw, the tamron 35 1.4 sp is really good, esp. for the price. it’s the only f-mount lens i kept
