Alton National Cemetery, looking towards Lovejoy Monument. Elijah P Lovejoy was a pastor who wrote anti-slavery editorials so controversial he became an object of hatred by slaveholders. He was attacked and killed in 1837 by an angry pro-slavery mob. Shot in 2019, after a fresh fall of snow.
