Well done in capturing the event. I know nothing of North American birds but I did witness something similar in New Zealand in the early 90's. Near to where I lived in Southland were a pair of New Zealand Falcons. I got to know them and each late afternoon I walked about 600m to observe them. They are highly intelligent birds.
Anyway one evening as I was walking back home [ the male Falcon often followed me ] a Swamp Harrier came along. Slow moving and a carrion feeder it is considerably larger than a NZ Falcon. The Falcon attacked the Harrier. It gained height then dived picking up speed. The Falcon hit the Harrier on its back causing it to fall. Fortunately for the Harrier it regained its senses before hitting the ground. The Falcon 'hit' the Harrier. It made no attempt to 'latch on' to it.
Just a bit of trivia.
