Beautiful portrait of a beautiful bird. You must have been pretty close at 300mm.
I love American Kestrels, and this is a great image of one. The one's I have seen weren't quite so vivid in color. As RecalcitrantRon stated, you must have been close. How close were you?

Truly beautiful bird and you nailed focus @2.8. These little raptors have quite an attitude too. We watched one take down a bluebird recently and was shocked that they could take a bird nearly their size. The foliage on the perch adds nicely too.
